Very interesting letter in the London Free Press this morn………. Humor me.
Conservative MP made flag motion
Your editorial, PM thwarting transparency (April 27) is incorrect in stating that the policy of flying the flag at half-mast from the Peace Tower was "initiated by the former government." It was initiated by a Conservative MP putting -- with the support of his party, including Stephen Harper -- a motion that was unanimously supported by the House. John G. Harding London
Like I said, very interesting (sounds like Laugh In)

What do we all think of the GST cut? IMO much ado about almost nothing.
Latest Edmonton Sun poll….
The GST cut could save you a penny per liter at the pumps. What do you think?
Out of 341 respondents………..
23% every penny counts 4% time to buy an SUV 73% it’s still a tax on a tax

Pretty standard conservative type budget. the part that's bugging me is the claw back of 50 basis points to 15.5% for the tax bracket for the people who make the least money. The Liberals gave them back 100 bps last time, and now the Cons are taking it back. They campaigned on being the defender for the hard working Canadian and now they're charging them for it.

Personally, I'm not interested in tax cuts. It doesn't push my hot button. My wife and I don't have kids, we make more money than quite a few Canadians and I'm more than prepared to pay my share if it means more Canadians get services they might not otherwise have access to, regardless of their specific circumstances. It's the original fundamental model or concept for why our country is so great imo.
My bi-weekly Federal Tax source deduction is $580 and change, which means I pay a thousand dollars plus per month to Mr. Harper's pot of money. Happy to do it. Rarely do I contemplate the figure to be truthful. I manage our household finances more prudently than our government, which means our debt is higher than I would like but it's managed and reducing, and I'm constantly scrutinizing where we can reduce or eliminate "non essential" costs.
Where am I going with this? There was not one fucking dollar in this budget allocated to reducing hospital wait times. In fact if you review the highlights, there is virtually nothing noteworthy related to health care improvements.
The governements major source of revenue is tax dollars. When an essential service is broken or requires improvement, it strikes me as near sighted to reduce your main revenue stream. It's like my wife and I having a hard time affording groceries to feed ourselves, but then looking for ways to reduce our household income.
Putting more dollars in the pockets of Canadians is a good idea. Stepping up military resources so our kids don't have to go to sand coloured regions dressed in green is a good idea as well. I just can't help but think a better balancing of priorities isn't in order.
When most consumers buy a product, they price is rarely first consideration, if they're getting suitable value for the dollar. Why do you think so many Canadians own Honda Civics? Don't reduce my taxes. Most of us are managing. Just give us proportionate value for the dollar. We're already paying too much in taxes, so bring the level of services per dollar up to snuff, instead of reducing the main means of even maitaining those services at a sub par standard.

Nah, Stephen's not into music, he's into Star Trek. www.optimuscrime.com/?p=953On the budget, Gilles Duceppe was sort of right yesterday when he said that the real one would be next year. I suspect when it comes it will trigger another election. This one is all 'minority campaigning for a majority', meant to establish the Cons as competent managers and throw enough goodies to the part of the electoral spectrum most likely to be swayed in their direction, to actually get them to vote Conservative next time out. Hence, tax cuts and deductions to buy home computers, etc. for the relatively well-off; an effective tax increase, through the income tax hike, for low-income earners. Fairly cynical document in that sense.
