The answer, you might be surprised to know, is not 100%. There's actually a level on which it's quite understandable and acceptable. But can you guess how much?

There is a level on which it can be rationally dissected and 'understood' in that sense but acceptable, no.
War crimes need to be punished to the full extent of the law. We can only hope that the apparent cover-up attempt receives equal scrutiny.

I don't understand your comment, Frag. But I find advocating and inciting murder to be unacceptable, whatever the reason - especially in the name of religion.

Just trying to add some balance. Personally, I find the war crimes shocking and atrocious. I hope the responsible parties will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This is far worse than Abu Graib. It's happened in every war and it should always be vigorously punished.
I don't know what happened to the pics, but you can view them at the link. The accompanying story is also worth reading. Note the difference in the words and messages in the signs above: "Fags are worthy of death," vs. "Behead those who insult Islam." Not defending any form of hate, but the messages are not at all the same.

But the message isn't really all that different, is it? Regardless, both are disgusting. But we all already knew that there were some crazy extremist factions of Islam out there, didn't we?
Haditha is Iraq's My Lai. It's pretty horrible, but in a way its also completely understandable, and that's the worst part of the whole thing.
