So not to revive this thread after it died a month ago, but there was some discussion on here about people needing to take responsibility for their dietary habits and stop shopping at convenient stores or eating at fast food places. A couple of us mentioned that it might not be this simple, because the distribution of healthy food options is heavily class-based, and Layla was a bit skeptical of that. Well, here's the deal from Memphis. I live downtown. There is not a single real grocery store anywhere downtown - just some convenient stores and liquor stores. There are some good restaurants, but they're upscale and expensive - if you want affordable food, your options in the downtown area are strictly Walgreens and fast food joints. That's really it. The nearest grocery store to me is a 15 minute drive, and that place is a dump of a grocery store, basically just a glorified convenient store. I do my grocery shopping at Wild Oats, the only decent grocery store I can find in all of Memphis thus far in terms of making some effort to sell healthy, nutritional options (it's also by far the most expensive place to go grocery-shopping) - that's a half an hour drive from me. And the public transportation here is absolute shit. So if you have no car, you have no decent options, and even if you have a car, you need to have loads of time, patience, and money. That's the reality of numerous American cities, folks. This is a real social justice issue. Yes, people need to be responsible about what they eat, and often they're not, but we have to look at the structural conditions which contribute to the socioeconomic demographics of obesity. We need better grocery stores and healthier options in inner cities, and we NEED public transportation - the latter for a thousand and one issues beyond just this one, of course. Cheers, MAre you fucking retarded Mary? Memphis has public transportation. They have had it for years. Maybe if you could keep from eyeballing the next lesbo you would notice it. www.matatransit.com/

You haven't mentioned anything about it Memphis. So you haven't even acknowledged it. Therefore, you have no clue what the fuck you are talking about. Try checking it out first before you call it anything. It helps when you have a working knowledge of the place that you say you live in.

Thats impossible being that Wild Oats is only only 2.8 miles from the college. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out that the best time would be after your bullshitting classes to stop off at the grocery store to do your shopping. Is your watch on the same drugs you are? Either that or math is not your strong point.

OK, I will explain this to you once, and then if you are still determined to misunderstand me because you hate me so much that you can't give my posts a fair reading, so be it.
I am not complaining about my own access, or lack thereof, to Wild Oats, or to any other grocery store. Even if I didn't work near Wild Oats, I do have a car, and I do have a pretty open schedule, so it's not a major issue getting there. My point was only that there are many places in the city that are very far from decent-quality groceries, and thus for lower-income people who live in these parts of the city, it can be quite difficult to maintain a healthy diet. Certainly not impossible, but more difficult than it should be, and more difficult than it is for better-off Americans. Furthermore, I'm not complaining about memphis specifically, I'm merely using it as an example - in my earlier posts on the board, I pointed the same thing out about West Oakland. This is the trend in most major urban centers; oakland and memphis just make good examples because I've become familiar with them. The problem is exacerbated in cities with poor public transportation options, but again, Memphis certainly isn't alone there.
That is all.

You know whats funny, while elitist bitches like you would go to higher places to shop, the lower income people would get on the bus be taken 8 miles from the college to the nearest walmart supercenter that just happens to be near Beale Street and Union. So they have access to decent provisions, not that healthy but they will survive. Neither of these places is far from the college, which is right smack in the middle of the ghetto with the dividing line being Lamar and Crump Boulevard. Half of it is upscale and the other half is ghetto. So Either way, you will find both types at the Walmart in that location. So again, your logic is faulty.

BTW did I mention that those same supercenters are everywhere in Memphis? So they will have no problem getting what they need. But yogurt/ sprouting eating fucks would never be caught there now would you? Hell there is one 4 miles away from your precious Wild Oats.lol
