This is as simple as I cam make it- The universe is in motion = true Something caused to be in motion = true We don't know what it was = true It should be acknowledge as the soul = opinion Look, soul is simply a word. Like gravity or dark energy or dark matter. It is a word that the ancient Greeks came up with to label that Unknown inside of man that caused him to be alive and be in motion. And this unknown that caused mankind is the same unknown that caused everything in the universe (and if you believe in string theory it goes back to everything that has caused branes and multiverses). So by definition this thing is the soul. Just like by definition gravity is gravity. The problem most people have with this word is that most people have been taught to think of soul in religious terms instead of scientific terms. People have ben trained to think of it in terms of heaven and hell, etc. But in fact the word soul has been co-opted by Christianity and all the other major religions, and as it was originally defined had NOTHING to do with religious doctrine or any of that other BS. It was simply a word that some Greek guys came up with, centuries before Jesus, or Buddha or Muhommid, because they simply used their gift of conscious existance and looked out into the universe and dared to wonder, "What the fuck is all of this and how the fuck does it all work?" Something that astrophysicists are still doing to this very day.

Listen, dude, I have no beef with you & this thread is silly. However, I must comment about your last post re string theory. When I was 5 years old they told my parents I was a genius (seriously. I had an outrageous IQ & my dad took me out for ice-cream. I'm no longer considered a genius. Well, if you compared me to children I would be). Anyway, I used to be a genius & I used to smoke weed like every day. And even then I couldn't figure out HOW the universe came to be. So you're certainly not going to be the one to do it. ok. fwiw - when you're discussing physics, its improper to talk about concepts like the 'soul'. Thats like having a discussion about thermodynamics & fairies at the same time. No good. Look McGee, just because you have great tits, that does not give you the right to tell me that I cant look out into the universe and wonder what it is all about. And it certainly doesnt mean that I have to buy into your Christianized (or whatever-religionized) version of what a Soul is. The word has been co-opted by organized religion to fit their doctrine, but initially the word was used to define EXACTLY what motivates EVERY astro-physicist worth his weight in dark matter to explore the universe and seek answers about it.

You cannot compare gravity to the idea of a 'soul'! No. No no no.
Gravity is a force. The soul is a romantic notion. There is no scientific idea of the soul. The "unkown thing inside of man that caused him to be alive & be in motion" is the BRAIN & the things our brains allow us to do, like have foresight & develop language & be capable of abstract thought so we can invent terms like 'soul' which people can bandy about like its SOMETHING definite & existing without a doubt.
Your perversion of science greatly offends me. Cease & desist at once!

Don't you dare bring my spectacular tits into this. You can ponder on the mysterious workings of the universe all you fucking want, but you're not allowed to bastardise scientific concepts when I'm online.
Astrophysicists are not on a grand mission to locate the source of the human 'soul', no.

Layla, you need to think outside the box. the word soul does not belong exclusively to the judeo-christian culture of western civilization nor to any other. Its an idea that began by looking out into the universe in awe and simply wondering what is it all about... A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!" Uh, yeah--that made no sence...have you and Tits McGee been puffin the magic dragon a bit tonite? Anyway, nice talkin to you folks, but I gots to get back to my busy and complicated life... Catch you all on the flip-flop

This is all pointless, I've already proved the existence of the soul.

Here's what this whole stupid board comes down to:
When Bozo uses the word "soul", he is using it in a way that no other person in the world does or ever has. He's referring to something entirely different than what every single person in the world other than him understands the word "soul" to mean. He's redefining words but not bothering to mention that fact before going into his diatribes.
Board over.

Actually I'm using the word in exactly the same spirit in which the ancient greeks (who first came up with the word) used it. The only difference is that mankind and the universe has evolved since that time and my use of the word Soul takes that evolution into account. This is a common thing. All words evolve. Their meanings evolve as man evolves. Take the word 'gay' as an example. It used to mean happy and spirited. But now it has evolved into a word that describes KenHolzman's sex life--oh wait a minute, that's a different word: non-existant. But anyway, you get the idea. Words change and evolve. The sooner you accept this the better you can adapt to reality and understand the universe.
