So what exactly is causing the discomfort if it isn't fear??? I don't see any other reason for discomfort other than fear of being infected. This reminds me that liberals, at the end of the day, really aren't that much different than conservatives (no insults or offense intended toward you, of course)... in terms of coming up with philosophy that they like and insisting that it's truth. Find me evidence that hatred for homosexuals is 100% linked to fear... and I'll concede the point. ... It's impossible. We're playing theory, here... as we wait for empirical proof to be produced... That's a problem with far-left philosophy: Assuming that hateful people are just fearful and that, in the end, we can just enroll them into sensitivity training and make them non-hateful people. Well-meaning, but still: Misguided. I'm not endorsing hateful, or even conservative, thought. I'm simply endorsing the pursuit of the truth, so that we learn more about the nature of humanity. There lies the origin of the problem!

I was unaware that this assumption had anything remotely to do with "far-left philosophy"....

If you're going by stereotypes alone, I think there is a degree of belief out there that those on the far left think that you can "inform and sensitize" bad behavior out of people, and that on those on the far right think you can "punish and beat" bad behavior out of people. Sensitivity training comes from the left, Gitmo comes from the right.

I guess that's an unfortunate aftereffect of the hippies - I would agree that stuff like sensitivity training obviously belongs more on the left than the right, to whatever extent it can be politically categorized at all, but I just wanted to point out that this is a narrow segment of the left we're talking about. It's not the Old Left, it's not black power, it's not queer liberation, it's not socialism...
But yeah, of course, you're right about the stereotype. The dippy kumbaya-singing new age earth mother thing. Obviously not a conservative. I guess I just wanted to emphasize: also not really a representative figure of the radical left, either.

And accordingly, I'd argue that the hateful, fighting image of the far right is not representative of the entire right. Stereotypes usually mis-represent large segments of a group, don't they?

Funny thing is that those two terms don't even mean that much in the american political landscape ...

Oh hey check it out hostages taken at Hitlery's NH campaign office by a man armed with a bomb Because in a discussion that is acknowledging that a stereotype of a large group does not represent ALL MEMBERS of that group, pointing to a person who may or may not be a member of that group(the guy is still in there - we don't know his politics or motivation yet) somehow disproves that? I'd call that fuzzy math.

I think you're taking me a little too seriously.
But then again maybe you aren't taking me seriously enough?

When you really think about it though, it says a lot about the general moral character of the average conservative that millions can listen to Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. bring up Vince Foster again and again and not think to themselves "I can't allow a murderous lesbian to attain the office of the Presidency of the United States of America, I just can't" and take matters into their own hands. Something of a similar nature was tried once before against the Clintons and that wasn't even politically motivated.
