RUSH is a band that comes to mind that hardly ever dips below the waterline of greatness. Out of 18+ albums, only 2 of them come to mind as being "sub-par" to me. The rest rock out in various amazing, rewarding ways. And they're having a new album released this June 29 -- the day before I see them live! -- called "FEEDBACK" -- it is the first full-album of COVER TUNES they've ever done, and it covers nothing but 60'S TUNES by the likes of Cream, Yardbirds, and shit like that. It is going to crank like a muthafucka, man I can't wait for that show. And on that very day (June 29) -- thoRny sees Simon & Garfunkle, LIVE, for the very first time. Sweeeeeeeeeet.

I just made the trippiest discovery. The vinyl version of OPIATE - man, it's freaky! You know that "bonus track" on the CD -? The one where Maynard is all "I had a friend once, he took some acid, now he thinks he's a fire engine" ~ ? Well thoRny has made the discovery of the millenium: That bonus track is hidden on the OPIATE vinyl NOT at the END of the album, but rather, in the most ingenious fashion, in the MIDDLE of the album, specifically, hidden directly in between the grooves of the 1st song on side 2 ("Cold & Ugly")~ !Yes, when you lay the diamond needle down to begin Side 2 of Opiate, what happens is the groove automatically ushers the needle down the pathway of the hidden track, skipping altogether the first 85% of Cold & Ugly~! Since the bonus ramblings only go on for a coupla minutes, you then get silence as the needle continues down this hidden groove track. As it nears the end of the space allocated for the song Cold & Ugly, it suddenly merges into the last little bit of the song, where it jumps out of the speakers in mid-jam! So what they did was, they hid the song Cold & Ugly behind the Hidden Track Groove! This means that, in order to hear the entire song Cold & Ugly, you must "jump the needle" over the initial vinyl groove (and out of the Hidden Track Groove), and you can hear the song Cold & Ugly from the beginning, missing out on the Hidden Track altogether! Man I was certain that I was just waaaay too high while listening to the album, and that the album was damaged! I was like, "WTF is all this silence-?" "And besides, where'd COLD AND UGLY go to-?!" Then I realized the truly deviously brilliant maneuver the boys in TOOL had taken: burying the hidden track in between the grooves of COLD AND UGLY! Man that is some wicked cool shit.

Just today I was telling someone about a remix that I got awhile back from the RS 'legend', Dobs......of a combo of Aenima and Lateralus where he dropped the vocals WAY low and then emphasized the shit out of Danny Carey. I haven't brought it out for awhile, but I don't have it here at the office, dammit...

There was someone else who I recall did a '3rd-sde' hidden within the grooves of an LP the way you're describing, thorn....like Zappa or the Beach Boys or someone...
Pretty cool the way you 'found' it BTW...

Yeah, I was amazed . . . Now I'm all pumped to get UNDERTOW on vinyl next . . . and then AENIMA....and finally, LATERALUS (in that order, of course). It will be SO COOL to "RELIVE" my initial introduction to TOOL, only all on vinyl this time. No matter what anyone says, if you have a serious turntable system with Expanded-Dynamic-Range diamond needle . . . listening to a proper recording on original pressing vinyl is a far superior sonic experience than the fanciest digital CD player system, by far. It's been nearly a religious experience for me, I feel "REBORN" into my vinyl obsession days. I'm a Born Again Vinyl Junkie.

Much like he did with Carey on that one, he focuses a lot on Chamberlain in this one, and allows Corgan's guitar to soar in spots where it would regularly be a bit more subdued. The vocals are really low, as well. He mixed it the same way, but I think the method was a bit more effective with Siamese Dream.

A real good way to get psYched for the new Tool is to listen to the 15-min + song divorced on The Melvins album "Crybaby".
NOt many have actually heard that song. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I've heard someone actually state the new tool is garbage.
Keep in mind: This assessment comes before the album has even dropped.
Nevermind splitting hairs as to the benefits/detriments of even listening to cheap bitrate rips; toss aside the age old controversy (that no one gives a damn about) of whether CDs or Vinyl "sound better".
Simply follow me into the labyrinthine odyssey that is the perception of what this mighty band has instilled in myself and a legion of others.
10,000 Days is about to drop.
Quite obviously, it could be an utter piece of "shite" and bomb horribly, it could elicit a chorus of "Meh" from all the die hards, it could flatline about an "average" 3.5 -star reviews on Amazon.com a year from now; and it could (quite possibly) amaze & delight all whose ears are finely tuned enough to revel in its inherent TOOLness.
Any and/or all of these scenarios (and many in between) are awaiting our hopeful (or pessimistic) selves.
Due to the imminent arrival of their long-awaited 5th studio effort, it's high time this thread rise back up to the top, I say.

Its not 'meh', Thorn, don't worry. It didn't grab me at the first listen the way Aenima did (though most of Lateralus took me a couple listens also), but Tool are a consistent band. They're not going to release shit.
Am uploading for ya. Patience, my pretty.

I think the 10,000 Days leak is a very elaborately orchestrated hoax (I don't know why you'd want to do that to your fans but anyway, we know Maynard is a dick), I bet its all B-sides & splices.
