It was all JLLM's fault. And Phil's, too. You know how subversive they are!

I knew it wouldn't last !!
Do every single discussion around the C.E. board has to regress inevitably to personal attacks ??
Oh well, it was interesting for a while ...

You weren't alone Phil. I had to look up both "jake" and "copasetic"!

Ah, just your typical, garden variety, knock-down, drag-out CE argument! And everybody happier than pigs in mud! I'm glad to see things getting back to normal... Meanwhile, I wonder what everybody's listening to...

I've yet to hear an answer for my dead parrot. Can management get back to me on that?

I have a complaint to register.
In downtown Houston, parking on the street is an adventure. Having a pick-up truck, I used to take advantage of truck zones, where you could park for free for 30 minutes for loading or unloading. They were essential time-savers. But then under the new mayor, they started making truck drivers have to purchase a permit to park there "for free"! And now these days, they seem to have disappeared altogether. Glad I declined to buy one, as I don't have to go downtown all that often, but I wonder if those people who bought those permits got any of their money back. I think not. So anyway, when I do have to go to downtown to make a delivery--like everyone else--I have to hunt for an open space that's not like 10 blocks from where I'm going. It can actually take longer to find somewhere to park than the actual time I need to be parked. Now, some streets have meters on them and some don't at all, but they all have signs showing exactly from where to where on the street you can park and for how long. Well, last time I was downtown (after circling blocks repeatedly as usual) I found like the only space there was near where I needed to be and it was one that allowed 1-hour parking, but for some reason the meters were covered up. So I figure "cool--they're not charging to park here now"; I park it and go about my business. Didn't even take 10 minutes before I was back out, although I noticed people were in their cars behind my truck waiting for me to go! So I hurried up and got in and zoomed out and figured that was that. Except that just the other day I got something in the mail--it turned out to be a parking ticket for that location I just described! Despite the fact that I parked in a 1-hour zone! They didn't even ticket my windshield! Not only that, they just think you'll know that by covering up those meters, you can't park there? What bullshit! Why don't they just take down those signs so people won't think they can park there? I think we all know why. Downtown Houston just keeps providing less and less street parking in tandem with more excuses they can have to ticket you. The City will stop at nothing to get your cash any way they can.

THey don't take down the signs because the parking ban is temporary. It's easy to put the bags on meters, and take them off when you can park there again. All the bags I've ever seen say "no parking" on them. Did you look at both sides of the bag?

Not to mention that this came right after I just took care of another questionable ticket. One thing about the po' sides of Houston (and there are many) is all the railroad crossings and how slow these freight trains can be. Sometimes they actually just come to a complete stop right there on the track while they're blocking one or more streets. Well, one day I was late for a delivery and had to get on one of the many smooth-moving freeways we have here (*scoff*) when I got stuck behind a friggin' railroad crossing with one of those damn trains that take all day to get across. It kept getting slower and slower until finally it ground to a halt. So I said "fuck this" and turned around through the island opening and went down to the next street that would take me to the freeway (the train was traveling south--in the same direction as I needed to go on the freeway). When I got there, I looked and saw that the train was blocking that street as well, so I had to keep going to the next main artery and try there. By this time, I was rather frustrated and desperate. I turned and saw the arms were down, but the train was still not approaching. It was a little ways down--just enough to trigger the arms, mind you--and no horn at all. So I go around the arms (as did someone else in front of me) so I can finally get to the freeway. No sooner than I did than a cop pulled both of us over simultaneously. I don't know where the hell he came from, but I have to wonder if they do this on purpose--sit there and wait for someone to cross because the train's not coming and the arms just stay down forever and ever. Oh, did I mention what day of the month it was? That's right--the last day. And I had to go to court and pay it while it goes on my record because I can't take defensive driving or deferred adjudication (county-sponsored bribe, that is) seeing as how I hold a CDL--despite the fact that I was driving my own personal vehicle. All for doing something that everyone does when the arms are stuck.

I didn't notice anything on them, but then again, I was in a rush. I'd like to know why there would be a temporary ban. Probably just a money grab, like I said.
