Proud - here's the details of the London's Calling re-release. I usually ignore a lot of re-releases, but there's no way I'm missing this one...
Clash come a-Calling again
The Clash's seminal album, London Calling, will be re-released on Sept. 21 to coincide with the 25th anniverary of its original release.
The anniversary edition will feature two CDs and one DVD.
The first CD will be the original album, while the second disc will be The Vanilla Tapes -- previously unheard London Calling demos including a number of tracks that never made the album.
The DVD includes a 45-minute Don Letts-produced documentary, which includes newly discovered footage of producer Guy Stevens and The Clash in the recording studio, previously unused live performance footage, interviews with Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, Nicky "Topper" Headon and Joe Strummer.
There will also be an expansion on the original packaging including rare Pennie Smith photos, notes by Tom Vague and a lyrics booklet.

i'll have to help boost the economy and buy it. i'm quite happy with the version i have, but when you throw in the extras and the demos, that seems like an essential for a clash fan.
clash albums i own: the clash (u.s.), give 'em enough rope, london calling, combat rock.

The only possible reason for anyone to own Cut the Crap is for This is England, which is an amazing song (though marred slightly by sing-a-long production and some electronic farts). Prior to Joe's late nineties comeback with the Mescaleros, this song marked the last great Strummer vocal. If you don't have This is England, it's worth hunting down online ... or it's on the Essential Clash collection that came out last year. It's well worth paying 99 cents for, but I'd still avoid Cut the Crap (unless you find it for 99 cents or less!). A simply horrible, horrible record ... even worse than U2's Rattle and Hum. So bad many Clash fanciers don't even acknowledge its existence unless forced! I can't wait for that London Calling reissue. Yeah, this will be the fifth time I've bought it, but that's OK. For "new Clash material" I'm happy to put another twenty or so bucks on the table. Somebody's got to support Topper's habit!

Somebody's got to support Topper's habit! LOL Ken!! I am definitely going to buy the rerelease as well... but jeez, do ya think Topper is still a heroin addict after all these years? That's taking heroin addiction to William Burroughs-esque levels! How can anyone be a junkie for their entire adult lives and still live anywhere near a normal life span? It's nuts. He sure did look like shit at that British awards show where the entire band appeared in public together shortly before Strummer passed away... I concur one should avoid Cut the Crap at all costs, however if you don't have Super Black Market Clash that's a very worthy addition to any Clash collection - it's practically like discovering a lost Clash album, it's got so much great stuff on it - Gates of the West, Groovy Times, Capital Radio Two, The Prisoner, City of the Dead - all classic Clash songs that you can't find on any album. Especially Gates of the West - that's surely one of their all-time best songs. NP: Wire - Pink Flag (song: Options R) Cheers, M

I remember when I first heard Gates of the West ... when I bought the Clash on Broadway set in '91 or so ... my jaw literally dropped! Not only was this a Clash song I'd never heard before, it immediately earned a spot amongst my five favorite Clash tunes! Most bands would kill to come up with a tune like this, and the band never even put it on a proper album (prior to Clash on Broadway and then Super Black Market Clash, the only way to get this was to find the single (b/w Groovy Times, I believe). Now, I can't do a Clash compilition without it.
I don't know if Topper's still doing smack (god I hope not!) but he sure does look like shit. And he was in bad enough shape that Joe had essentially said that there can't be a Clash reunion w/o Topper, and Topper can't do it. It's really sad.
Oh yeah, I bought that NME/Clash mag. Some great stuff there, though I haven't read the whole thing yet. Really does capture the band, from what I could tell.

The only possible reason for anyone to own Cut the Crap is for This is England Hmm, I guess "just for the hell of it" doesn't qualify as a legitimate enough reason then. That's why I want it in any case, although I have yet to act up on that desire despite the fact that it's been years since I first harbored it. I lent my copy of London Calling (along with a whole bunch of other albums that I love dearly) to someone whom I might never meet again, so this would be the perfect opportunity for me to re-purchase it. I just hope the Japanese release will include the DVD though. I normally wouldn't care about Japanese releases, since I could easily snag an import, but the US or UK DVD most likely won't be playable in Japan. Seriously, what the fuck is it with these various "regions"? On a somewhat related note, I wish I had a DVD player...

DVD players do kick ass.

It's called "copy-protection" Ryo. DVD's encoded for North America won't play in Japan, and vice versa. Same goes for any of the movie studio's "regions" (i.e. Europe, Australia, Asia, etc.) It sucks.
