Phil's got some explaining to do. Yes he does! He better not be taking Proust's name in vain, or he will be struck down by the furious lightening bolts of the smugolarian Lord of the Canon!!!

a boy I taught in Sunday School named Brian who had to have half his brain removed. jeez. I've read quite a bit into cases like this when I was studying, it always fascinates me when people undergo massive brain surgery & survive. Do you know why? Was it something congenital? He had a rare disease where half of the brain literally eats the other half. His symptoms were siezures - a couple of hundred a day. His parents literally had to take shifts at night one sleeping, one watching him sleep to deal with each siezure. So they did a first surgery where they separated the two halves, leaving the now disabled half in there but useless. But something happened about a year after that surgery which I did not completely understand, but I THINK the two sides attempted to reconnect, and the siezures started again. So they did a second surgery where they removed the bad half all together. The most amazing kid I have ever met in person. Other than an occasional inability to use his right arm and a slight limp, (and a big scar on his head were he to ever shave his head) you'd NEVER know what he'd been through. And despite the misery he went through from ages 2 - 4, he's got a happy disposition like I've never encountered in a person.

Wife has a kid with a disease like that. Her brain is just getting eaten away, and she could die anyday. There's no way she'll live more than a couple years. She's this normal, popular little girl, and a lot of the other kids don't understand what's wrong with her. She doesn't have to go to school, but wants to. Usually has to read things a few times, because she can't remember much. Occasionally bitches at the slapdick kids in class for taking it all for granted. Cute little girl with a great disposition, she totally understands what's happening to her.
No limp or scars or anything like that, but it may be a slightly different disease. Struck her out of nowhere in the fifth grade; my wife teaches her in 7th.

r.i.t., have you read harold bloom's "the american religion?" coolness. yeah, i've read that and quite a bit more by him. the gnostic professor, with an eye set squarely on the wisdom tradition in literature. I've devoured books by him for years now. i haven't picked up his latest, Jesus and Yahweh, but i might.

The second surgery with Brian (is supposed to at least) fixed things for him.

So the outlook for him is ok, then? The fact that he has ended up with minor gross motor skill defecits after having that kind of disease & surgery just goes to show how awesome our brains are, because whats happened with him is that one half of his brain began to compensate for the other even before the surgery. I was assuming you'd be telling me he'd have massive deficits in performance. I'm glad he doesn't. The kid that Luke's wife teaches, however, thats sad Kisd just amaze me, they're so resilient. Part of my job is to assess general functioning in patients with brain damage/after surgery or trauma etc & the other day I spent a few hours with a 7 year old who had a brain tumour the size of his fist removed. He no longer has the ability to walk & has to be rehabbed & go to physio almost every day for a long time. But you think that kid is letting it get him down? No way. He spent 30mins explaining the finer points of his Xbox to me. Cute.

- Your most marked characteristic? Um, my thinning hair? My Germanic nose? I dunno, I think I look pretty nondescript (maybe that's my most marked physical characteristic, or maybe the fact that I wear glasses?)
- The quality you most like in a man? Quality.
- The quality you most like in a woman? Intelligence, wit, and taste. Helps if she's pretty and loves rock and roll, too.
- What do you most value in your friends? Wit, generally decent people.
- What is your principle defect? Clinical chronic major depression. Everything else wrong with me (and trust me, there's plenty!) comes at least in part from that.
- What is your favorite occupation? I assume you mean hobby or activity? Aside from listening or talking about music, I enjoy playing my horn, riding my bikes, and hanging out with my puppies. And cars. I love cars.
- What is your dream of happiness? To be happy.
- What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes? To lose my mental capacity, or to be unable to communicate with the rest of the world.
- What would you like to be? Better.
- In what country would you like to live? If I spoke German well, I could see returning there. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy in the US. Oz and the UK would both be cool as well. Just as long as there aren't any tornadoes, I'm cool with it.
- What is your favorite color? Depends on what we're talking about. For clothes, I like blues and browns for casual and favor dark suits w/white or blue shirts (and fairly loud ties) for the office/court. For cars, I like silver, red, and black. But black is such a bitch to keep clean. My last two BMWs have both been blue, oddly enough.
- What is your favorite flower? I don't much care for flowers.
- What is your favorite bird? I don't trust birds. So I guess it would be penguins, who are about as un-birdlike as you can get.
- Who are your favorite prose writers? I don't read much fiction any more. Been reading lots of science (paleontology, cosmology) in the last two years.
- Who are your favorite poets? Homer. Not the bloke from The Simpsons, either!
- Who is your favorite hero of fiction? Obi-Wan Kenobi. Captain Kirk. Frodo Baggins. Odysseus. Hector.
- Who is your favorite poster(beside Phil) ? Bowiglou, Mary, JAC, Paul Cook, Dolly, JLLM, Strat-0, RocDoc, Dr.Drum, Tuneschick, Rocky, Chrisfan ... oh hell, I love everyone! (Sorry if I left anyone out of the specific listing, it would just take too long ...)
- Who are your favorite heroines of fiction? Pallas Athena (I also have a long standing love of Greek myths).
- Who are your favorite composers? Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Strummer-Jones, Mozart, Beethoven, Springsteen, Davis, Coltrane, Weller ... you get the idea.
- Who are your favorite painters? Not real big on visual arts ... I like some Picasso pieces quite a bit.
- Who are your heroes in real life? I don't really have any "heroes" that I've aspired to emulate. If I did, it would be folks like Springsteen, Weller, Strummer.
- What is it you most dislike? Aside from my own damnable depression? Billy Joel. The rock and roll anti-christ.
- What natural gift would you most like to possess? Perfect pitch. With it, I'd be a full-time musician right now.
- How would you like to die? Unexpectedly, and NOT following a long illness.
- What is your present state of mind? Burned out. It's been a rough week.
- To what faults do you feel most indulgent? I eat the wrong foods and I waste time (witness all my posts here!).
- What is your motto? It ain't no sin to be glad you're alive ...
At least that's it for today. Tomorrow it'll be something different ... maybe.

la, oops. where did i get the chicagaaaan idea? i dunno.
r.i.t., the american religion was great, and nearly spot on with regard to mormon elements as far as i'm concerned... the only other book i've read by bloom was "The Book of J," and various essays and crit analysis... i've been meaning to pick up Jesus and Yaweh one of these days too. that, along with Hegemony or Survival, will probably be my next bookstore purchases....i'm definitely excited to consume all the bloomin' bloom that i can... i feel as passionate about it as i felt during my 19 year old joseph campbell/james frazer days...lol
