It's a matter of respect. It's a matter of doing to others as you would have them do to you. I doubt that they can appreciate (or understand) such concepts as "candor" and "walking on eggshells". None that I ever worked with could. I've worked with high level and low level mentally retarded adults and I would NEVER call them such a denigrating name. It has nothing to do with her devotion to them, either or some "underlying love of her subjects".
I'm not trying to stir shit here, all I'm saying is that it offends me, having been in the field myself. I think it's tacky at the very least.

Well, I can certainly understand your perspective, and perhaps its a good thing you called her out on it.

wow. well i'm sorry i offended you jac, and i'll be more careful about using the word on this board. in any case, it was never really about candor, all though that was a nice try on thorn's part. it has always been more about messing with people who don't work in the field....seeing how they respond, a sara-silvermanesque sort of thing. it's always rather revealing. besides, i take good care of them and they love and always ask for me. i think that they have some amazing qualities and i admire them. as for my boss, he KNOWS i use the term occassionally and counts me as one of his favorite employees. in fact, he's been pushing me to accept promotions (that i don't want) for over a year. finally, take peace in the fact that although not up to your standards of political corectness, i'm an employee that does my job. there are many out there whose political corectness knows no bounds, yet manage to take advantage of and abuse the mentally ill/adults with developmental disabilities. i'm not, nor will i ever be, one of those persons.

Indeed there are countless numbers of people who are in the field for the easy money (and it is possibly the easiest career field one can choose). I've seen both HTS and PCs who abuse the priveledge of working with these people in many ways. The old saying about how hard it is to find good help rings true all too often, but they do seem to keep enough employees on the payroll, don't they? My objection to that word has nothing to do with any overriding desire to be "politically correct". It just struck me as offensive, something I would never in a million years call them. If the shoe were on the other foot and I was developmentally delayed I think I would not like to be called a "tard". So yeah, I find it offensive. In Oklahoma a person has to go to a class called Foundations before they can work as an HTS. One of the lengthiest segments of this class concerns itself with what is called "People First" language. I won't go into all that, suffice to say that using a word such as "tards" goes against every principle of People First language. I am very surprised that your supervisor lets you get away with saying it, because it's grounds for dismissal according to People First policy. I am glad that you enjoy working in the field (I had to give it up back in June to deal with my own problems) and I am even happier to see that the individuals you work with love you. A good relationship with these guys, after all, is what you're REALLY getting paid for. I'm not here to police your speech and throw a fit when you use what I consider inappropriate language. But I would exhort you to think about how demeaning the word "tard" is to the people you serve. They deserve better, surely?

I rarely use the word, and would I never use it around them. I use it in my own good humor with friends. I picked it up from a friend, Matt, who introduced me to the field. This is a guy I would say has more love for the people he works with than any others in this valley, and has helped many to make remarkable progression. He teaches special-ed now. He uses the term occasionally in good humor. It's not as if we lather all our conversations with it. This is clearly a subjective matter, and I'll hope you lighten up and let it go this time. Jac, I appreciate your perspective, but I think I've said what I have to say about this and I would rather not banter back and forth about it any further.

Not much I guess. I did buy a bed, yesterday.
Let's see, samps' current status:
- should be sleeping, just got off work - single (!!!) and finding that the benefits of NOT living with a speed freak far outweigh having someone to sleep next to at night - working nights, sleeping days, groceries, bills, near weekly rearrangement of my apartment, petting of the cat, emailing of the mother, not much else.
how bout you? are you still slumming it in the big city?

No I haven't been in the city for a couple years. I live back in the valley, playing guitar, doing yoga, working, daydreaming. All the good stuff.

sounds wonderful. i'm digging the slower pace my life has taken on these days. sometimes the most exciting thing i do all day is cook dinner. lots of time to make dinner for friends, or read. sounds boring, but it beats the hell out of going out every night.

delegation of power
you think i am the alien robot sent to destroy that which i cannot ever have for myself [you] [see me] [disembodied anger manifest] that your pain hinges on me seeing something so close that i can never really understand because i am missing that component. too high in the mental stratosphere and too low in the emotional stratosphere to ever fit in anywhere
but actually i am the evil doll that sleeps in your bed that enchants you and your friends all day i let you play with me and watch through glass eyes until i see that you have fallen asleep and no longer love me, and then i take a butcher knife and slaughter you bride of chucky style.
