i rummaged through craigslist (dunno if they have it in GB, i think so) to find a temporary sublet situation. i have a couple friends who live in portland but they're mostly through my ex and while of course i'll hang out with them, it's a little awkward calling someone up saying "hey, i'm alan's ex, remember me? can i sleep on your couch for a month?" so i found these five kids living in a house somewhat near the area i heard was cool, and i have a bedroom to myself and people around to help me not be lonely.
i'm freaking out now because i leave in two days and i swear there is more to be done before i go than i've thought of. it seems too easy to just throw clothes and music into a suitcase, pay the next month's bills and buy a train ticket. i'm certain i've made some ginormous blatant omission in my [lack of] plans.
oh well. i am young and stupid, and this what young stupid people do.
i won't be working for an entire month. totally bringing my 10-pound 1980's nikon and taking lots of pictures, maybe writing, it'll be nice. i'm just afraid of loneliness i guess. whatever.

Maarts ... This one's for you ... Top 10 Amsterdam coffee shopsAmsterdam is changing fast — a third of its brothels are being closed down and coffee shops face a no-smoking ban next year. But Philip Sen discovers a thriving alternative to the 'alternative' scene. Philip Sen Guardian Unlimited Wednesday September 26 2007 The first thing that crops up in any conversation about Amsterdam is its illicit atmosphere, with hookers and hookahs along every canal. But the climate is changing. Last week the city announced it was closing down a third of its infamous brothels, and in April, its "coffee shops" were forced to choose between serving alcohol or dealing in officially-tolerated marijuana. Most chose the weed, but from next summer the Dutch will ban smoking in all public outlets. How exactly this will affect the wacky baccy trade is unclear, but things will never be the same again in one of the world's most progressive and tolerant cities. However, it's not all bad news. You won't find many locals in the grass emporiums anyhow: most have grown out of those kind of joints (or at least grow their own …). Ask an Amsterdammer and you will find that the city actually has a thriving café culture to rival anywhere else in Europe. A Dutch café is more than just a greasy spoon: many serve a delectable variety of beers and liqueurs (for actual coffee, hot and made from beans, you need a koffiehuis by the way); some open until 3am or even later. So take a moment to check out the alternative to the alternative scene. Here's just 10 to try, but if you hit four of Amsterdam's cafés every night it would take a year to cover them all. Altogether a far more civilized way to blow your mind ... Read more... www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/sep/26/amsterdam.travelfoodanddrink

I am totally homesick. This sucks. For the first time in my life, a place that I actually miss.
i started crying to my very confused (male) best friend on the phone earlier. i feel like a retard. this is a beautiful city with wonderful things to do... and i feel like i'm trapped here. if i flee after only a month, how lame would that be. and my friends aren't helping, they are offering to put me up on their couches and begging me to come back. i feel like a retard.
cheers to homesickness. =(

HÉ! It's always nice to know you got friends you can fall back with if the change in scenery don't pan out ...
Give it your best shot and more time and if you're still unhappy after that just go back "home" ...
At least you will have tried !

Yeah I decided I am going back in a year. That way I don't feel so trapped but I can also say I lived for a year in portland. I feel lots better.

I've moved 13 times since graduating college four years ago. I think I'm over change for a while.
