By the time I was 26, I'd lived in 27 different towns. Hold on a sec. That's . . . one town for each year, except for one year, where it was two towns. Damn. Yep -- and actually, at one point there I lived in the same town for six years -- so there were some years when it was like four or five towns. My dad went through a lot of jobs there for a while. Every once in a while I still get the urge to up and leave everything and start over again, but it passes pretty quickly. In general, I don't even want to leave my house for any extended period of time. I don't even like going out of town much any more. I'm becoming a pretty fair hobbit in my old age.

Some of the places I've lived ... Iowa. Indiana. Colorado. Illinois. Kansas. Missouri. Texas (El Paso -- which really shouldn't count as "Texas" but should give me points for both Chihuahua, Mexico, and New Mexico). New Mexico (one summer during law school). Nebraska (okay, technically I lived in Iowa, but I worked and went to law school in Nebraska -- if I had to pay tax in that state, it counts for residency too!). South Dakota (Sioux Falls was the major city in my area from the time I was a junior in high school until I went in the army some five years later, so this probably the closest thing I've got to a "home town," even though I never actually lived there. I did live in Vermillion, SD, for two-plus years of college/work before I went in the army, and so SD was usually where I put down for "home" while I was in the army). Minnesota (in a haunted theater, for the last year and a half of high school -- when pressed, I'll usually claim Minn. or S.D. as "home" or "where I grew up" even though I didn't live in either until I was 17, but those are the locations that feel closest to "home towns" to me). West Germany (Wurzberg, to be precise, back in the days when it was still East and West Germany as two separate countries). Only a couple of places east of the Mississippi River, and nowhere west of the Rocky Mountains. All over the fucking midwest, though. Not sure if that's a plus or not. Either way, blame my parents. I do.

ugg, can't sleep.
the city
she lives in Building L, coated uncomfortably in grey film.
darkness looks in on her - sad folk in the squirmy morning hours gaze slyly, hopefully into the light; she sits sourly measuring their windows of time. the show must go on, deterministically. their feet carry them away and she smiles an ugly smile, turns another page.

god there is NOTHING worse than being trapped at work with nothing to do except think about all the things you could be getting done if you were only free... free outside this carpeted box of cubicles... fresh air... urgh. i think i'm having the classic dog daydream. making a mad dash for the outside world. i just want to go roll in grass and bark at people.

I'm working at the new high school in Halifax as an education assistant. I'm living with my girlfriend in Dartmouth which is pretty much across the harbour from Halifax. Haven't had a lot of time for much besides reading, walks, and cooking. I'm going to head down home to the valley on the weekend for a day.
I've been reading The Brothers Karamazov, and books about dogs and cults.
I want to get a dog in 2 years or so.

Moved to Portland, Oregon and work as a temp for the home loan department of a bank. Too poor to really do much but read and cook and ride around on my bike. Reading books on Plato and Francis Bacon mostly.. I know, dorky. So what do you do as an educational assistant? What kind of dog do you want to get? (I want a boxer, male or female, maybe in a couple years also)

I want to get a Border Terrier, but i have a few other kinds of dogs in mind. Wheaton Terrier, shelter dog....
I work with a student who is in his late teens, about 6 months old intelectually. He can bare his weight and walk in a walker but he needs a wheel chair. He a pretty happy guy, noisy sometimes but i've got a good set up working with him this year.
