As such a new member, I don't know if I can presume to start a new thread, but I thought I'd throw it out and see what came of it...
I'll start with this: Heisenberg's uncertainty principle says that the act of measuring something changes the innate nature of the object under scrutiny. One of the big trends in art and philosophy these days has been the concept of "the other." When did we become aware of "the other?" After realizing ourselves as separate and distinct from our environments, from other people, when did we become self-consicous/self-aware about our roles as observers? When did we realize that we could not take ourselves out of the larger equation? What effect does this crazy ouroboros loop have on us? Blabbity blab blab blab...
I am really interested and obsessed with this topic...interested in just about anything that involves the nature of perception, so all rantings, babblings, and even stream-of-consciousness ghetherings will be delightsome fur mich!
Grazi,
Shasta

Interesting thread, sisyphus.
"When did we become aware of "the other?" " -
The day we were cast out of the garden... Just as soon as we bit into that bittersweet fruit... The moment we looked down at our nakedness in shame... When the flash of lightning betrayed terror in our face... When we feared the thunder crack down from space... And we could see our shadows cast back from the light of grace... After we named each thing so as to distinguish it from the rest of creation...
Following this thread of thought, it becomes clear that "The Other" may be something we invented... or rather, forgot...
Something that was always naturally a part of us...
but which we fell out of grace from.
Now that "other" can be thought of as anything that makes us complete, be it that yearning for union found in another of the same or opposite sex, found in a career path or an obsession, be it a hobby or religion, anything that helps complete us and makes us temporarily whole.
Taking this idea to its ultimate conclusion, it becomes evident that "The Other" is a trade-off for having gained the knowledge of the difference between "good" and "evil".
Having bitten into this Fruit, we transubstantiated and gave Form to The Other....and perforce named it "Heaven" and "Hell" . . .
a sweet paradox a bitter truth

Grazi, Shasta Hmmm are you a reader of Hegel? Fabulous passage in the Phenomenology about consciousness first encountering 'the other' - called the master-slave dialectic. check it out if you haven't already. also sounds like you should read levinas....again if you haven't already!

thanks to all you Descartes out there! i'll respond with "i love, therefore i am!"
mary, i have not really studied Hegel in depth yet, but I think I'm preparing to jump into it, and I'll start with your suggestion. (Much appreciated!) As for Emmanuel L., I have been getting into him a bit...and Lacan..
I love it when Levinas concludes something akin to: "the transmutation of the Other into the same..blah blah blah...is the essence of enjoyment."
Have you read any Martin Buber? ;)thanks to all you Descartes out there! i'll respond with "i love, therefore i am!"

"the whole weight of being can be resolved into a play of inwardness and stand on the brink of illusion, so rigorous is the adequation. The apparition of being is possibly but appearance. The shadow is taken for a prey; the prey is let loose for the shadow"
The Trace of the Other, Emmanuel Levinas

anyone found a form of meditation or a place in space where you feel totally at-oned with the world?
i have one place in space, where i feel at-oned, but i also feel out-side-it. i'm looking for more of these places.

anyone found a form of meditation or a place in space where you feel totally at-oned with the world? Yes. My life. i have one place in space, where i feel at-oned, but i also feel out-side-it. i'm looking for more of these places. Breathe in . . . slowly . . . and deeper than you normally would. Breathe out, just as slow, as much of that breath you initially drew in. Repeat.

sigh. yes, that is a good one. and i realized i have more than one place, too. i have been in awe for the last month or so, anyway. mmmmm. breathin it in.
by the way, i'm glad it's your life....even when schisms of otherness slip into your at-oned demeanor, i suppose they balance....
