Are you talking about the one in Denver? The Ogden is my favorite theatre in Denver. People try to say The Gothic or The Bluebird have better acoustics, but you just can't beat a nice small venue with good stageviews no matter where you are and sticky floors to keep you grounded. Doesn't hurt that it's like three blocks from my apartment. That's the one...we drove 10 hours to get there for that show. It was well worth it, we got one of those table seats just above the pit. VERY close to the stage. Probably better than floor seats because the level of the stage was even with where we were sitting. Nice. Yeah I've seen tons of bands at the Ogden. Thrill Kill Kult, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Gram Rabbit, Front 242, The Legendary Pink Dots, The Ditty Bops, Rasputina, Covenant... I got kicked in the head at one of the Skinny Puppy shows and had to go out and sit on the curb for a bit. Ended up crawling through the alley to get home that night; I lived just on the other side of the alley on Emerson Street. Good times.

a couple weekends ago my friend who owns a record store and has started to build his record label put on a music festival and brought in Reaxion Guerrilla to play... AMAZING performance. the one guy is from peru (but lives in kansas?!) and the other one lives here. sort of along the lines of Psyclon Nine without the ego. anyway, my friend is considering signing Reaxion Guerrilla... i'm so excited for him! his music festival is going to become a yearly thing and he wants to keep bringing in acts from overseas. this year a whole bunch of bands from germany (SITD mainly I think) showed up and drank like over $1000 of booze. well worth it.

I wish I had friends who organized festivals, so that I could pressure them into booking my favorite bands. Seeing Natsumen tonight. Oh, and samps, I couldn't find any shows I wanted to see on November 23, so I have decided to have dinner with my mother instead. Just found out about an awesome, awesome show that will be held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan late next month. ahum.jp/The Kokugikan is where the major sumo tournaments are held, and I had no idea that it also hosts music gigs, but apparently it does. I hope we don't get tackled or anything by sumo wrestlers while we're dancing. The lineup is stupendously good: Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, Little Tempo, Oki Dub Ainu Band, Tha Blue Herb, Ego Wrappin...I am almost literally drooling with anticipation here. I don't even care that the gig will go on for nine hours - I will definitely be there.

Ooo....well, you'll have to keep me abreast of the information about the festival, samples. That is effing cool.
Ryo, let us know how Natsumen is. They are a brilliant band. I'm curious as to how the new album is, do you like it?

So yeah, I saw Natsumen last night. They also came out with a new CD, ONExMORExSUMMERxSHIT (which, really, is more of a single than an EP or a mini-album) that day, and naturally I stopped by at the Tower store in Shibuya before the show to grab this. This being a Tuesday, the line to the cash register was annoyingly long, but the fact that I noticed more than a few people holding that Natsumen CD put a grin on my face. I was pretty sure that most of them, like me, would be heading off to the Club Quattro afterwards.
I arrive at the club pretty early, before doors opened in fact, mainly because I wanted to take some time to listen to the new CD. The club eventually opens (sold out show, btw), and I go in. I discover a friend there, so we talk, but this is soon interrupted by loud karaoke singing. The band apparently thought it would be a fabulous idea to record themselves at a karaoke box and blast this through the speakers. So for nearly an hour we were subjected to awful karaoke renditions of Japanese oldie hits, old anime theme songs, Celine Dion (the Titanic song of course, what else), and Michael Jackson. And by awful, I do mean awful, in a group-of-drunks-who-clearly-don't-give-a-damn-that-they-can't-sing-for-shit kind of way. I don't know why they're putting their fans through this. They're sadist fucks, all of them.
The band comes out. AiNe isn't there for some reason (though I'm assuming the lone female voice in the karaoke recording was her) so it was just AxSxE on guitar, plus drums, bass, keyboard, two saxophones (one of whom I actually saw just three days ago at the Hiroshi Watanabe + Keiichi Sokabe show), and trumpet. I only found out later that they had a different drummer.
AxSxE smashed his guitar into the mike stand during the very first song. The roadie comes out to bring him a new one, and he - we're still in the middle of the first song - proceeds to smash that as well. AxSxE's just standing there laughing while the roadie is wearing an "oh geez..." expression - poor guy. They somehow get the guitars up and running again, and the band duly blows our minds away, playing most of the songs from NEVER WEAR OUt yOUR SUMMER, several tracks from Endless Summer Record, and a couple I didn't recognize.
The funniest moment was probably at the end, when AxSxE brandished a bottle of whiskey for all to see, naturally eliciting loud cheers from the audience, but then couldn't open the damn thing. So he just danced around with it, and then disappeared backstage. They came back for an encore to play "Newsummerboy" - enthusiastic moshing ensues. Really, they were every bit as amazing as I expected, though I'm a bit unhappy about the length. An hour-and-a-half is way too short of a set considering that they were the only band on the bill. I mean, come on, most of their songs go on for like eight minutes - how hard would it have been to extend that to like fifteen?
Having said that though, this is still one of the best shows I saw all year, and now that I've finally seen them, I guess I can say at last that summer is officially over.
Also, AxSxE was missing a front tooth.

Ryo, let us know how Natsumen is. They are a brilliant band. I'm curious as to how the new album is, do you like it? It has six tracks, but really, it's more a single than anything. Only two of the tracks are "real songs" and the rest is just aimless noodling and noise. I'm loving the two tracks though, especially the first one, which is like a cross between the songs on NEVER WEAR OUT yOUR SUMMER and Endless Summer Record, going back and forth. I'd love to get a whole album worth of stuff like this, but right now, I'm just reeling from the sheer awesomeness of last night's show.
