They got off stage about 11:15 or 11:30, NC has an 11:30 curfew for any concert venue larger then a club.

Those are some setlists for Wilco. I listen to the free show that you can access through the latest album quite a lot. Still, I wish I would have got to hear "Shot in the Arm" and "Lonely 1" live in person, not to mention the new material. I did get to preview "At Least That's What I Though You Said", though.

I'd seen Wilco way back in 1999. It was on a folk festival, so we got more Mermaid Ave then Summerteeth. Honestly the only thing I really remember is them playing Passenger Side and Tweedy yelling at a guy in the front row for reading the news paper while they played. I was looking forward to seeing Wilco again. This was a different band though, in more ways then just the fact that only two guys from 1999 were still in the band. No longer did they push the songs along with bar band gusto, now they allow the songs to pull them to their oft atonal destinations. I thought Muzzle Of Bees was an odd opener as I think it's probably the least destinct song on A Ghost Is Born. They were haf way through the song when I remembered the title. Over the course of the evening they would play all but two songs from the newest album and in truth this would be my only complaint. As a fan I would've liked to have heard more from Summerteeth, the feeling was intensified by the treatment given to Via Chicago. The bits of random noise and counter rythms that were pushed to back of the studio version were brought the fore on stage. Only Tweedy and Stirritt still playing the orginal melody the rest of the band ran head long into a glorious wall of noise only to rejoin the song a moment later in time for Nels Cline's soaring, fluid guitar to provide a perfect contrast. Cline is welcome inclusion even if he is likely a temperary addition. Never given too much room to roam he still had plenty of moments to shine. The guitar solo section in At Least That's What You Said now doubled with Cline and Tweedy both playing the screaming notes was another instance of making, at least on me, a bigger impact then that of it's studio version. Jesus ETC is easily the best track from YHF and they could have played it twice, I would've been okay with that. The rest of the main set followed an ever other song from YHF then AGIB pattern. The first encore is where fans get treated to some older songs. As with any socially aware in an election year band this is also the oppertunity to do alittle soap boxin'. After finding out that only two people in the crowd (Of a bunch of hippies at a Wilco show, not much of shock) were planning to vote for Bush. We got Christ For President followed by two from Being There. Kingpin is another song that just seems to keep getting better. The second encore began with the experiments left behind. I'm A Wheel was as rock as rock gets. Complete with a Skynyrd style triple guitar threat and windmills. After dedicating Be Not So Fearful to Republicans in the front row they ended the show with the easy pleasers of Ashes Of Americans Flags and California Stars. It was a long show, too many bands crap out at the hour mark these days. Well on their way to being the E Street Band for the future age...minus one large black man, Wilco certainly delievered. It had been awhile since I'd been to a concert and I missed seeing drunk couples slow dance any and every time the music slowed down for any reason whatso ever. White girls will dance to anything. After walking the half a mile back to our car it was back down the mountain. My only regret is that we missed Portastatic, we arriaved just in time to see them walk off stage. Next week I will see Pearl Jam and Death Cab For Cutie at the same place. I will be early. Wilco- Sept. 24 Thomas Wolfe Asheville NC
Muzzle Of Bees Company In My Back I Am Trying To Break Your Heart A Shot In The Arm Via Chicago Hell Is Chrome Hummingbird Handshake Drugs Jesus ETC At Least Thet's What You Said I'm The Man Who Loves You Theologians Poor Places Spiders (Kidsmoke)

Yeah, to certain people, slow songs incite the same reaction no matter what the content. One of the times I saw Wilco, I definately saw several couples holding each other tight, gazing in each other's eyes, and whispering "I dreamed about killing you again last night and it felt alright to me" in each other's ears. Beautifully fucked up.

DED
I'm so sad I didn't get to hear California Stars and you did. But I didn hear it last tiem I saw 'em in lexington.
But, I was really happy, i must say, that I did get to hear When the Roses Bloom Again, and it was the highlight of the night.
Oh yeah, I saw 'em in Nashville, 9.22. with Joseph Arthur, who I missed because my Nashville friends weren't ready and we had to wait at their apartment FOREVER. I wasn't pissed until I wa slistening to Joseph Arthur on sirius and realized he's freaking' AWESOME. oh well...at least Wilco rocked.

Plus THE OBLITERATE PLAGUE will also be playing -- that's my friend ALEX in the middle, jammin out on his guitar to the unholy chaos of Cthulhian overtures that is his band's nihilist musical dessication. The Obliterate Plague is also fantastic, full-out blackmetal assault on everything sane and orderly, a terrifying onslaught featuring their newest member Tony (my ex-roommate) who is amazingly talented on the lead guitar. This show is gonna be SmokiN tonight! \m/

Well, the suppurating DarkneSS & black power of evil was in full effect Friday October 1st @ Burt's Tiki Lounge - (1 of the Top 20 "dive bars" in America!) - my friends in THE OBLITERATE PLAGUE set the stage for chAos with an unrelenting set of pure focused mayhem, everyone got loosened up & drunk & ready to roar, then BEYOND THIS FLESH played and by that time the mosh up front was in full effect, beer bottles & all, and finally the night's pitch black headliners in IBEX THRONE took the stage and that's when the real chaos erupted: they began about 5 minutes before last call, so the bartender was all pissy and there was these punks from ENDLESS STRUGGLE in the bar who didn't like the looks of Lord Dying, one of Ibex's guitarists, nor his skinhead appearance or questionable tattoos, so suddenly the bartender is suckerpunching LD in the back of the neck, this kid from Endless Struggle smacks my friend Pat from the PAGAN DEAD upside the head with a beer bottle, and the riot was on! Everything went from fun drunken moshing to going-for-the-throat rage and chaos, as more people added to the clusterfuck and next thing you know, fights were breakin out left and right, a few of us got wise and headed out the door, and moments later the knot of rioters spilled out onto the sidewalk, I unlocked my bike just in the nick of time to avoid it getting flattened undert the wackoes, and suddenly 2 cops are there chasin' this kid named Casey also from PAGAN DEAD, who looks kinda like Danzig and he was sprintin ahead of these 2 rookies who didn't even know how to run right, they came straight at me and Casey ditches to the left leaving one cop skidding off and the other one takin a hard ass spill to the concrete -- his cellphone goes clattering away -- and then my friend Tony is facing off this other cop, right in his face threatening to split it wide open!, that cop was like a deer in the headlights -- Tony is one hard motherfucker -- and right then the cop who took the spill got up and started callin for backup, so more of us began headin outta there, I kinda swooped wide on my bike and stayed on the periphery just to make sure all my friends were accounted for and not getting their skulls cracked open. Meanwhile Ibex & Obliterate are haulin their amps & gear outta there, I pass by the front and look inside and there is broken glass, bottles, busted chairs, and blood all over the floor and walls -- the place was wrecked -- so I took off on my bicycle and headed over to Ibex's recording studio & met up with the guys in the band, helped em unload their gear, and we kept on drinkin and partying in their soundproofed studio until 4 in the mornin, at which point I caught a ride out to Midvale, where the rest of the blackmetal freaks and rockers were hangin, along with Pagan Pat who received homemade stitches from our own Vanessa, he was swearin to god that he was going to personally hunt down every last member of ENDLESS STRUGGLE and kill them the next day. Well Burt's had advertised kickin' off "October Madness" with Obliterate Plague + Ibex Throne, and a night of real black metal is precisely what they got, total destruction and anarchy, it was a freakin riot. Needless to say, that show has already gone down in history here as their greatest show yet, cross one more bar off the list where they can play, man there aren't that many bars left in this city! \m/

Pearl Jam/ Death Cab For Cutie/ Gob Roberts- Asheville Civic Center
Gob Roberts- Tim Robbins' political punk band. Actually not that bad once you past the 6'3 50 year actor who's bit shy on his rock chops. I wouldn't buy the album but they didn't embaress themselves.
Death Cab- They just aren't made for places this big. The sound gets mudled and you lose the space and this band is all about space. They played their rockers and did well but these guys just aren't destined for the arenas.
Pearl Jam- Ed has a cold I think. He has tea (or coffee?) and kleenex on the front on the stage. So no solo pre-set. I was disappointed but I got over it becuase they came out swinging and they didn't let up. These guys, despite a cold or flu or whatever, had their rock on. They are a great live band and I have not a single complaint about what they played...however... having looked at the sets from the first four shows I can't help but feel abit slighted. It was by far the shortest, least varied set they've played. I don't blame Ed for being under the weather...but why'd it have to the show I went to?
One last note being part of the Vote For Change tour it is a political event. Outside they were registering voters and handing out fliers and there were Kerry/Edwards and anti bush signs all over but inside there was very little soapboxing. Both Death Cab and Tim Robbins simply reminded everyone to register. Ed brought an article about Police officers from the area leaving for special police units in Iraq and dedicated "Long Road" to them. Later he sited the new report on WMD's but didn't really sat much about it...the biggest statement actually was Stone asked everyone what they thought about Earnhart...I didn't know what he was talking about...but it seems he was fined and removed from his number 1 posistion for saying "shit" on TV. Ed got on a short freedom of speech thing and then back to the rock.
Rating: B+
