I can send you a pair of "pet" dices to hang from the mirror ...
Or a little scented "pine tree" ...

Man, that sounds like a dead miss, Scottsy! It's really running that bad? The good news is that if it's performing that badly, it shouldn't be too hard to find the cause! There's got to be a reputable tech in your area that can help you out. I mean, it might cost you a little, but you may have to fire your old mechanic.
It's hard for me to say much, based on what I know about your situation, but I would start with some basic testing. I don't know if it's setting codes, but I doubt the answers will be there anyway. I would start with a compression test and a vacuum test and go from there. That can tell you a lot. These things aren't that expensive, but one has to ask oneself "How much do I like this car?" It may still be something fairly simple, or it might need - say - a new head gasket. That can be expensive (several hundred dollars or more), and when you can get a pretty decent car (around here at least) for a couple grand, you have to ask yourself again: How much do I like this car? If you love it, and you've got it set up like you want it, then get it fixed - otherwise, cut your loses. I sense the old girl is special to you...

Strat, the idea of getting a new car has flashed across my mind a few times... I do love the ol' girl, but if she is going to cost me a packet, basic economics has to come into it... so yeah, if the bill is going to be hefty, I am afraid selling her and starting fresh or trading up will be my only option.

Actually I am close to going on holidays to the US for three weeks in about three weeks time, so i am close to just kinda shelving the whole matter after Thursday when it goes in to get looked at again... I'm not high in confidence about it, but it will have to become an issue for when I return should it be too expensive or they can't locate the cause of the issue...

I can't wait for that holiday over there!!! It's going to be one brilliant Christmas for me!!!
Well, took the old girl into thge mechanics today... they put her their diagnostic equipment and found that she was misfiring, inspected the spark plug leads, and found one to be defective... I think the term they used was "open", I presume this to mean maybe the lead casing had perished or become damaged?
They replaced the one lead, wich was a little miserly, since replacing the whole set would do no harm, especially since one has perished.
I'll buy a set tomorrow and replace the whole lot, thus minimising the risk of a recurrance.
Ran for a good 45 minutes, up and down hills, air conditioner on full, pushing the motor up hills, through corners, stop start traffic, everything.
Not a single beat missed. I could be fucking lucky...

A bad spark plug or wire will sure do it! Yes, I'd change all the plugs and wires. Just be sure to do them one at a time, unless you are very familiar with the firing order of that engine! (And check the gap on the plugs before you install them. Use care breaking the old ones loose and don't overtighten them! Only just snug.)

rockkid... my little baby IS a Nissan... :-)
Albeit, 13 years old, with a GM motor, as Nissan brokered a deal with General Motors - Holden for the manufacturing of the engines of their early 90's Pulsars.
Strat, replaced entire set, and she's running beautifully. I have my old car back, and the relationship is mending beautifully already! :-)

Kias are alright for economical driving...
Good to see you're a Nissan man too! Until the early nineties Nissan used to build cars here in Australia, till they got squeezed out by Holden (GM) and Ford dominance, along with the rising fortunes of toyota...
They built themselves a solid reputation for reliable, well made cars, particularly the Pulsar hatch, which my proud little vehicle is... they have a reputation for being fairly soild and bullettproof little things, and I am happy to not that even my most persistant problem of recent times was only a minor peripheral complaint, and I am back to full potential.
I have heard of these little cars going well over 300, 000 km, which is no mean feat for a small car...
Mines thirteen years old, and despite a few signs of ageing, looks almost brand new, drives like a dream (except when the plug leads are screwed!) and costs very little in fuel...
Goota give your thumbs up to the Nissan brand!
