*Even if you figure in the surrounding Valley townships (Salt Lake is spread out), the total comes to about 1 million overall.
That is about one-half of a percent of NYC's population . . .

I live in Ste-Anne-de Beaupré (QC) about 30 kms east of Québec city ... Population in the province of Québec in 2004 was more than 7,5 million, 6,5 million francophones.

So, the pop-off valve on my hot water heater started leaking and dumped a lot of water in my garage today. It was a mess, but no big problem, right?
I went down there to replace it after work tonight, and upon close inspection, I find that the the fittings are all permanently fucking soldered in place. I don't know what kind of a jack-leg would install the thing that way in the modern world -- it's unbelievable. This is just the pop-off valve. Fucking soldered in place. I'm a mechanic by trade, and I can solder and repair fittings, but I'm not a plumber - I can't fix that without a huge learning curve. Only a complete fucking moron would have installed the thing like that. It's not even old, yet installed with 19th century technology. So, I get to shave and bathe with ice water tomorrow.
A woman might appreciate the hardship of bathing in cold water, but only a man could understand trying to shave with cold water. It's inhuman. Perhaps some boiled water will help.
So, I'm going to have to pay a fucking plumber to come out here and replace the damn pop-off valve while I'm at work. It's absurd! Ridiculous! Why didn't they use compression fittings? I know not why. duh...

We have hot water again. Boiled water to shave this AM and only washed where it counts. I think I got off easy at $130.

REAL easy, especially by Chicago standards!
Of course unless you're 'in' with Lithuanian Tradesmen to whom the health of their lumbar spines is veryveryvery important....

Alas, I belong to no group that I could hope to barter with for plumbing services! It did seem like a good deal, though.
What a wonderful luxury is running hot water! Sometimes we forget...

What a coinky - I just had my hot water heater replaced on Wednesday. Heater 290.00 Install 219.00 Permit 40.00 "Extra" parts because the previous owners used illegal plastics - 90.00
Oh - and Sears took the money out of my checking account TWICE! When I called about it the lady actually said to me "That's why I tell people not to use debit cards for big purchases." WTF? And don't even get me started on the roof I had replaced last week. They are coming back today after I called and bitched about the mess. It's been fun.....
