Rocky, re my Ipod gift (and kat's for that matter):
Good luck, but you're likely to be addicted to it by the end of the week. Seriously, it's a life changing purchase. I'm not kidding.
Maybe kat was salivating for one of these though, but I honestly don't see the time or a particular 'application' where I'm going to want to listen to the thing.
The 'ideal' situations for it just don't seem to be there for me.
- I don't travel on public transportation where I'd have a need to 'disengage' and kill the time with music pleasure.
- My ~30 minute daily commute is by car AND 75% of the time it's with my 2 year old in his seat; I have to/WANT to engage him PLUS I'm listening to traffic reports on 780 AM as I maneuver the neighborhoods I'm going through.
- After I get home and we've got the boy washed up, 8ish-9ish, I would FAR rather find some cool shit on the TV (ruled by the almighty TiVo (*prostrates himself at the altar*) , which is FAR more a life-changing technology over that of a piddly iPod IMO) rather than listen to music, which I most likely have gotten 6-8 hours worth while at my office here already.
- It's ruled out totally for use while working out every day for two reasons:
1. Theft from my locker at the gym while I sauna and/or steam and then shower. Rampant. So you'd be stupid, capital 'S', if you brought in a decent watch, let alone a $200+ piece of technology for some street crackhead to get hisself a sure 20 bucks for. 2. My workouts involve sweating BUCKETS. I have ruined cell phones with 5 minute convo with the phone pressed to my sweaty head. 'Not covered by your guarantee, Sir', ha. In-ear headphones useta had about a one month life expectancy the way I used them.
I read magazines or the paper now.
Even if I did find the time, 90 minutes of music on a C-90 cassette Walkman was truly life-changing, back-in-the-day and honestly, 90 minutes was more than enough, FWIW.
Oh. AND it was more than enough to enable the tinnitus to lodge itself more firmly, going 'EEeeEEeeEEeee-eeeee' betwixt my stupid ears when 'Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love' or 'Voodoo Child' would come on and couldn't help but crank the fucker up.

well i actually never wanted one, i have always been (since my old walkman with mix tape) a fierce mini disc loyalist, for its high quality of sound, and the fact that it was insanely inconvenient to create a mini disc. you know, the sense of accomplishment for a good compliation. one was so perfect, i actually read it out to maarts and scott at the airport. so proud.
but that being said, i do spend about forty minutes a day all up on public transport, and i walk about two kilometres a day most days of the week so it is handy. i've always always had ear buds in my ears but my mini disc was stolen at 4am in a dodgy part of sydney.
but i am now a strict convert. i've been sitting at my desk at work listening to it for the past two days. fucking awesome. though i don't like the way that my typos in itunes or bad categorising (as i didn't have a net connection for ages, and i always have to type the name of the music i'm importing) it doesn't look right. but i shall live.
but the earphones that come with fucking suck. don't even bother using them. too fuzzy sound.

Congrats on your new iPod, Kats! Fortunately, better earphones are just a visit to an electronics store away. I found a set of cheap Sony's that wrap behind my head that I'm real fond of, and when they get trashed, new ones are only about $25. I'm really amazed that so many people like the standard iPod earbuds, which I can never get to stay in my ears comfortably.
RocDoc -- I've got a couple of suggestions for you. First, since you've got a brand new iPod, why don't you load it up with some of your favorite office music, and try hooking it up to the stereo to provide background music while you're working. See if you don't discover some of the attraction of letting "shuffle" pick your playlist for you, or being able to go for three or four albums without having to select anything to listen to. Second, if you try it out and decide you really have no place in your life for an iPod, erase its hard drive, auction it on eBay, and use the procedes to purchase something you actually will like. There's no reason to keep it and then complain about it.
And BTW, if you're gonna sell it, you might want to do so before the next Apple press event/product intro, which I think is set for some time in January. Steve Jobs almost always brings out some new kind of iPod at those things, which generally means that the previous generation loses a bunch of value pretty quick.

That is indeed a great Christmas gift. You've got a great mother-in-law, Riley.
But it's not the greatest TV show ever ... just the best comedy this decade. ;D

See, my wife offered to give me the receipt for the iPod as soon as I didn't exactly swoon dead away when I unwrapped it. Probably have 30 to 60 days (depending on where she bought it) to get full price while not having to bother with fucking with E-Bay at all...
Yes, setting it up as 'Random Music Generator' for the office was one of the first uses I toyed with, but I'd be forced to narrow-cast my choices if it was a case of being 'office-friendly' music. Or correctly 'patient-friendly' music...
Better still make a '1000 Best Of' songs which just knock me out as I hear them from my aural travels here. Which will definitely make for variety, serious variety.
But they've all gotta be 10s....a thousand of 'em.
Failing that, I can also store data in that 4G, can't I?
See, I'm also not 'complaining' about the thing, but moreso seeing the drawbacks for me to use it after having gone through umpteen Walkmans of all sorts of manufacture, cassette and CD both....portable music doesn't set me on fire anymore.

It's really easy to create playlists. It would take you about 5 minutes to create a playlist called "Office-Friendly" and put in only songs that are appropriate for the workplace. Can listen to the playlist on shuffle too.
And yeah, you can store data on there too. 4G can also store and display photos. How many gigs you got?

I put this up at Latest Music Purchases, but I think it got mostly missed.
My sister got me the new Who album for Christmas, Endless Wire. We played it last night while visiting, kind of in the background, and I must say nothing really jumped out and grabbed me, but I'll have to give it several more spins to give it a chance. I'm playing it again now. It seems a bit depressing. "It's Not Enough" rocks pretty good, though.
The CD has nine tunes and "Wire and Glass - A Mini Opera." It also includes a bonus DVD with five tunes from a concert this summer at Lyon, France. Sometimes Daltrey has a tough time of it, but I guess he's always been like that. He keeps pulling out his earpiece monitors. Townshend comes out in this goofy yellow shirt that makes him look like an aging American tourist. But he plays some good licks, true to form. One thing that struck me was how Zac Starkey seems to acquire some of the mannerisms and facial expressions of Moon in some of the riffs. I wonder if it's an unintentional function of playing in a similar style to Moon's for those tunes. It's almost as if he's channeling Moon's spirit. He does a great job playing, at any rate.

So you should be able to load photos, but no video. I have a 4G but haven't used it all for photos other than album artwork, so I can't vouch for how easy any of that is.

Oh wait, do you mean you have a 4GB iPod? Sorry, I thought you meant 4th generation (when I got mine I was cruising around some iPod boards for tips and such, and that's the lingo they use: 4G=4th Generation, 5G=5th Generation). So I was thinking that was what you meant. In that case, I have no idea what your photo capabilities are on there. The playlist stuff should all work the same, though.
