Howenstein -- Check this: I got me my tix to see Dream Theater open up (and most likely blow away) YES @ Red Rocks, Colorado on September 10th.

Cool, Thorn! I saw Dream Theater here in Detroit last March -- all by themselves. They played for THREE AND A HALF F---IN' HOURS with a 15-minute intermission.

That recent Yes album (Messenger) is pretty damn good. And D.T. has a lot of Yes influence, so it's a pretty good combo. But I agree D.T. will likely blow Yes right over the peaks of the Rockies!

Man, with the YES + Dream Theater concert @ Red Rocks only 3 days away . . . and knowing that YES will not play anything later than 1978 ("Don't Kill The Whale" being the most recent song of theirs on the setlist, I believe) . . . I'm starting to tune into the distinct vibe that YES will truly earn their Headliner status come this Friday evening. Obviously Dream Theater will blow us away with an impeccable set . . . I can hardly wait to hear stuff from Train Of Thought . . . and I'm praying to all the Gods they play GLASS PRISON off of 6 Degrees . . . but I am certain in my heart of hearts that YES will be pure magic. An evening to remember, surely. The wait over the next 3 days will be grueling. But what a payoff.

Well, it was YES who blew Dream Theater away, in fact. Yes indeedy. DT played a rather uninspired set -- I believe in a half-hearted attempt to "cater to" the Yes-set. A strategy which earned them a rather dismal failure, in comparison with the stark contrast of YES's phenomenal and energy-charged set.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed DT's set -- but the only time they raised above to the standard I expect from them was when they played Stream Of Consciousness -- the ONLY song they played off Train Of Thought! And of course there was no Glass Prison, not within leagues of what they played. Disappointing indeed, when considering DT's true potential. They should have lined up their set with their strongest, best songs ever; that way, they might've stood a chance at holding their own against the mighty talent of YES.

All in all, a great evening of progressive music.

HOwenstein -- if you're still around, considering your taste for progressive types of music, I urge you to just drop everything and immediately go buy Coheedd & Cambria's In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3. It is part of a 4-album concept - cycle, set in a future where Earth is but one of 80 planets called "The Fence", and the band's name is a reference to a husband & wife, General Coheed Kilgannon and his wife Cambria. The 4-album cycle is astonishing in its depth, breadth, and range of storytelling, and the lyrics reflect this arc brilliantly. Every single song on the album is sheer inspired brilliance. Each song breaks down into several different riffs / choruses / and time-signature changes, so that each song is a miniature sort of epic jewel, with multifaceted melodic aspects. The more you listen to it -- the more you are inevitably drawn into the infectious, inspired melodies and vocals. An album that will truly grow on you, as long as you give it a chance. The vocalist has one of the most impressive ranges in rock music today. The lyrics are stellar. The whole package of C&C is enough to take your breath away. And yet I have found none, NOT ONE, poster on these boards who will even acknowledge their existance, let alone state how they feel.

But I'm relatively certain anyone on these boards who even has an opinion on Coheed & Cambria, most likely developed it from having heard one of their songs on MTV or the radio -- perhaps only one brief part of their song -- and immediately concluded (quite incorrectly) they were a band to be written off, for whatever reason.

BIG mistake.

Coheed & Cambria is most certainly my favorite new band on the musical event horizon. I saw them live, and I am veritably adrool at the thought of the third installment to their epic science-fictional quadrilogy.
