Thing is, this song SHOULD be disassociated with Britney. It deserves a WAY higher spot than number thirteen, and you have to be fucking tone def not to ADORE this tune, but let's face it, what the hell did Britney Spears have to do with this song? So her voice was electronically dubbed into one of the catchiest hooks in the history of music. She's not singing on it, she's not showcasing any talent, she's just having her voice manipulated into a computerized instrument by (and everyone loves these guys, from the hippest of hipsters to the teenybopperist of teenyboppers to the thuggest of thugs) the Neptunes. Seriously, this is a Neptunes song, and that's why it's so great. Britney's talentless, boring, hillbilly slut ass did el zilcho to make this song great. They could have computerized my fucking grandma singing, and this song would have been just as good. This is a tune about the Neptunes, not Britney and, sadly, there wasn't anything remotely catchy on the rest of this wretched, dismal album. And oh yeah, now for my mandatory Toxic plug... www.localh.com/toxic.mp3

"Toxic" made me a Britney Spears fan. I really like that song. Before hearing "Toxic" I never listened to a Britney Spears song.
One of the best albums of the 2000's I think is "American Life" by Madonna. Although her least successful, I find it her most intimate and spiritual. Exceeding "Ray Of Light" in how personal those songs are written and performed.
My least favorite song is "Hollywood." My most favorite is "Nothing Fails" and "Love Profusion."
Think the next time I see Britney's "My Prerogrative" I'll purchase it.

Though the anti-rock bias of the folks who compiled this list was a bit much, IMO. I would have expected to see "Slither" and something from All That You Can't Leave Behind in this list myself, but maybe that's just how out of touch I am at this point. Woah, where was "Beautiful Day"? That's the big rock single of the present decade. When it comes to what a single's function is, that one was perfect. It was heard everywhere, brought great anticipation for the the upcoming record, and is still often heard a few years later.

"Ray Of Light" remains my favorite Madonna album though. Love that video.

I think you guys are forgetting that pitchfork hates U2. And they're too busy copying stylus/ilm to have original opinions anymore.

Pitchfork is such a joke. I think that amp's summation of them, the bit about how you never know why they feel the way they do about a song but you know they're giggling whilst typing, is spot on. They hate "big" rock, and they hate British hype. But they love the REALLY poppy stuff, because it makes them feel like they're this special part of "ironically cool" land. Fuck them, really, they should all die of "douche fuck who spends too much time in front of a computer trying to look intelligent" cancer.
Really, though. I look down on them as I do people who give Britney Spears credit for "Toxic", or idiots who think that American Psycho was "all in his head." Aggravating and ignorant.

Their numbers one and two were dead on. Not even fucking close.
And cry foul over PFork all you want, but they're still the best at breaking legit indie music on the web. Hell, they were smart enough to realize that the Killers are a farce, what more do you want?

Oh, and I'm fairly certain that the Neptunes did not have their hands in "Toxic". It is damn catchy though.

I wonder if they've had their hands in Britney?

I think Pitchfork are useful if you don't get hung up on what little wieners they are. I mean what are they doing that's really that different than what we do around here, but without sponsors and mandates? Most of us are just as annoying when we've just heard something and step up to the keyboard, it's just not our job.
They are in the know, which makes it easy to pick up on new and interesting shit we might not otherwise have access to.
Plus their office space is probably the one place in the world they can all congregate with 100% certainty that none of them will get wedgies.

OKay, so I may come out as an ignorant cockface on the Neptunes issue, but still. Point stands.

Yes Pitchfork is pretentious, and Stylus right now is my favorite of the indie websites(except metacritic.com where you can read any review written or typed) But look out how some little wuss like Rob Sheffield @ Rolling Stone makes his living writting puff record reviews about what they wear or who's dating who rather than just talk about the album,so all these "indie dweebs" do is write some overblown hype with a thersarus of big-words to back their silly little attempt to get-back at everyone who can't sit around and actually TALK about the music they hear
I feel the same way about Movie critics when you find one who shares your taste, usually at least 75% you can understand where They're coming from even if you disagree.
I always find "in the know" to be a stupid classification for I-have-no-life-besides-what-other people-percieve-as-important behavior.

Patten, if you haven't heard the Johnny Boy song you have to go find it online. Like right fucking now. It's pretty much a Phil Spector homage done by two British chicks who, as far as I've heard, haven't done anything else. Lifts the ever famous "dum, dum dum ching" from the Ronettes "Be My Baby" (also famously stolen by Jesus and Mary Chain in "Just Like Honey"). Pitchfork had it at number 50 on their 2004 list, yet amazingly it made the top 100 of this list... I think it's brilliant, to say the least.
