I remember my mother’s fox terrier puppy pissing on Blood Sugar Sex Magik. An astute critic, that dog. With an impressive eye for an overrated album. P.S. I voted 'parts of both', which looks to be the norm around here, eh?

Most recent victim of my dog was the book that came with my extended re-release thingy of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. I smacked him a good one over the head with it.

I used to be very obsessive about not damaging books. But I kinda like to be a little rough with them nowadays (you know, folding back the covers, dog-earing pages to mark where I am, etc.)...I buy a lot of my books at Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores and at library book sales so they usually already have some wear and tear going. Books bought new at the bookstore are the most fun to "wear in". I love books, don't get me wrong, but one of the things that puts them above reading stuff on the computer is the fact that I can manipulate them physically. Don't know why that makes it more enjoyable to me, but it does (number one reason why books are better than computer monitors for me is less eye-strain...I really don't like to gaze at computer monitors for extremely long periods of time anymore cuz my eyes start to hurt). CDs, on the other hand, get tender loving care. Just as much as I used to give my vinyl albums, none of which ever felt the touch of my fingers on any portion of their surface, only the edges and label.

The first time I found myself in unemployment during summer holidays at university I sat down with my mother's Bible & read the whole thing from cover to cover. Its probably easier to not read it in chronological order, but I'm anal about such things. The Bible is many things & to me its a book first & foremost so I read it as one.
I didn't even peek at the last page to find out whodunnit.

I don't mark anything. I've got notebooks upon notebooks of notes for stuff. Yeah, it can get expensive (especially if you go one notebook per book). But hey, that's what scholarship was for.

Yes I have these notebooks all over the place too. Also it seems to stick better when you jot the stuff down yourself.

But you can have it both ways! I underline in my Bible, but I've also got a composition book in which I've copied, by hand, the complete text of Paul's epistle to the Romans (without verse numbers or chapter divisions). By doing that I was forced to pay closer attention to every word than I ever could just reading it, and it was very instructive. I plan to do the same with other books of the Bible, and am actually looking forward to copying the Psalms.
