so i made the trip[ down and picked up my new frame. it's even more beautiful in person than pictures can show. for some reason, this particular color is hard to capture in pictures. it's either too dark, a bluish green, or too bright, a sparkly emerald. when in truth, the color is most like a deep, dark jade green. anyway, here's a few pics. sorry you can't see them in their original larger size, but my hosting place cut them down. time to find a new one i guess. the frame frame with the chrome fork the extended head tube, and a bit of the original Mondonico head badge, used by Antonio's father Giuseppe back in the 1930's or so. the decal marking this as one of the last frames Antonio built prior to retiring look closely inside the bottom bracket and you can see one of the pins used to hold the tubes in place prior to brazing, instead of tack brazing them. Antonio would fit the tubes into the lugs, then drill a hole and insert a small pin. once brazed, the pins would be filed down. this procedure is little used today, as it is time consuming and labor intensive, but building the frame this way means that the tubes are only heated once during building, preserving the strength and ride qualities of the tubing. gotta take some better pics, these didn't come out that great, as the sun was almost too bright at the time i took these today

Here's a nice on for $1300, it's steel (mmm...), has a Campy gruppo, and comes in Celeste.

If you can bump up a bit in price, this is a very sweet bike ... Campy Veloce components, steel frame, even has Look compatible clipless pedals (which'll save you at a least a hundred or more bucks), for $1,699.00, If you like steel, this would be awfully nice ...

Even better. However, I don't really have a "price range" per se, as it's probly going to be a loooong time before any of this happens, for obvious reasons. But under-$2K seems pretty reasonable.

There's a lot of really nice stuff for around $2K ... including some carbon fiber Treks and some slick Cannondales (nowhere near as stiff as they used to be), and of course Bianchi makes some nice rides in that range. You can also find some good deals used -- I was offered a Fondriest for $2K before I bought my Bianchi, which was a gorgeous bike (and one hell of a frame), but it was just too big for me. Fit is really important -- probably THE most important thing. Giant and Specialized also make some very nice bikes around that price point. Of course, I started looking with a top end of $2K a bit over two years ago, and wound up overshooting that by a fair amount. But every time I get on that rocket, I know why I spent the money ... You'll just have to explain to the wife that some of the baby items will have to wait until you get a new road bike. I'm sure she'll understand!

Fit definitely is important. Thing is, I have no idea what size bike I need, and I've never been measured.

Go to a good local shop, they should be able to do a quick-fit to let you know what size frame you should be looking at. And any time you want reminders of why you need a roadbike, I'm always happy to post more "bike porn" here. ;D

Phonak team says Tour de France winner Floyd Landis tests positive
2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis of the U.S. waves the LONDON (AP) - Floyd Landis' stunning Tour de France victory just four days earlier was thrown into question Thursday when his team said he tested positive for high levels of testosterone during the race.
The Phonak team suspended the American cyclist, pending results of the backup "B" sample of his drug test. If Landis is found guilty of doping, he could be stripped of the Tour title, and Spain's Oscar Pereiro would become champion.
It wasn't immediately known when the backup sample will be tested.
The Swiss-based Phonak team said it was notified by the International Cycling Union (UCI) on Wednesday that Landis' sample showed "an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone" when he was tested after stage 17 of the race last Thursday.
"The team management and the rider were both totally surprised of this physiological result," the Phonak statement said.
Efforts to reach Landis were not immediately successful.

Checking in with the RS cyclists while I'm here on my semi annual visit, how goes it?
I'm still kicking, triathloning, running and cycling, getting older but getting faster, just PRed in a 5K run (22minutes) and a 10-mile TT (25mph).
Ken, you ever do Hotter than Hell? Got friends who do it every year, I keep saying one time...

Very cool article, Fuzz. Is it less humid in the winter there? I can't imagine being out in the stuff in the heat (and humidity) of Florida summer, but it looks like it'd be a hell of a ride with more reasonable weather.

Oh. So does my 30 year old 27" frame Schwinn World Sport....
But already it says so in some of the long ago posts here when you maniacs were discussing these beaucoup bucks- level orgasm machines you're lusting after... a solid bike plus your muscle, that's all one needs. Molybdenum/titanium isn't going to get some officebound schlub some sort of an advantage unless he gets off of his ass and RIDES like Strawman rides.
I useta LOVE riding 4-5 hours and getting lost in some sort a of god-forsaken suburb surrounded by rivers and highways where you have no idea how to get out...
