...is 100 miles once around the lake?
It's 72 miles around the lake. They have us do a 14-mile out-and-back to Truckee to total 100 miles.

ok, let's see if this will work. nope it didn't. i don't have a website, and it looks like yahoo won't let you link to their photo albums. let's try this before i just give up and post the hyperlink.

yep you're right achn...that is one beautiful bike..the steel, chrome and colour combine to make a superb traditional racing cycle...as you say it's probably very stiff so that it still is great to jump (attack) with and climb with...the colour looks fantastic...and its been sooo long since I have seen a beautiful set of chromed steel forks...I've been on carbon forks (with the exception of the steel (painted) on the Cannondale) since about 1998...what's the wheelset?

I asked Bill McGann from Torelli if they would build me a set of wheels when i ordered the frame. Chorus hubs, Torelli Triumph rims, made by Ambrosio, so i assume they're roughly similar to their excellights or whatever they're called, i'm not really up on Ambrosio rims. wheelsmith spokes, 32 count.

Went OK, took 'em nine hours to finish, which is an hour less than I estimated. Wife's computer shows she spent 7:20 on the bike, so the nine hours includes an 1-1/2 hours spent at sag stops and porta-potti lines. Women are too civilized to use a tree when nature calls.
Weather was great, started in the high 30s, got up to the mid-70s. Did have a lot of wind (15-20 mph), and it was a head wind for the last 12-mile stretch, just to make things more challenging. On the biggest downhill, I could not get over 30mph (usually top 50) due to the wind.
Wife did great, whole lot of climbing for her first century. She kept rolling the whole way, didn't walk up any hills like a LOT of people here did. She actually finished ahead of me as I flatted on the last stretch and told her to go on while I changed it.
We're still here, leave later this morning. Yesterday we drove down to Yosemite NP, saw some great sights.

bear...do they have a competitive section in the Tahoe ride? I ask this because in NZ we have the fun rides, but there is always a race that heads off first for those of us who don't find just completing the ride enough!!! The main fun ride is at Lake Taupo, which is about 160km around (163km from memory). Theres now about 9 or 10 000 riders lining up..chaos really, however there is an elite mens race that goes off an hour before the start, and if your times and finishes in similar events are OK then you can get a start...heres the web link for that event www.cyclechallenge.org.nzit's been a few years since I raced this one, but who knows I may do it this year? A similar one is the Rotorua to Taupo 100km flyer...get good winds and its over in about 2hrs 10 min, although this year it was head winds all the way and took us about 2hrs 30min.. Well i hope there weren't too many strained muscles the next day...at least you got there accident free, which really is a bonus when riding amongst a swag of recreational riders...although I've seen some shocking riding from the elite guys too!!! congrats mrs bear for me...

dunno if you guys watched the tour last year, because if you did you would remember the polka dot hill climbers jersey on the cliffs...this was the stage that I rode, and I went back the next day to get the photo...too hard (steep) to stop and start on the bike to get this photo

bear...do they have a competitive section in the Tahoe ride? I ask this because in NZ we have the fun rides, but there is always a race that heads off first for those of us who don't find just completing the ride enough!!! No competitive class here at Tahoe, as a matter of fact, there is no official timer. not even a common start as they send only a couple of hundred riders out at a time, in five minute waves over an hour or so at the start. Unlike running, cycling here tends to keep the racing events separate from the "recreational" events. Of course, if you desire you can go out fast, there is usually a lead pack that you can follow at 24-26 mph or faster, but you're really only trying to beat your own time. El Tour de Tucson, last November, was an exception, there was an elite class and a competition, does draw some more famous riders (Robbie Ventura is one that comes to mind). That ride was 111 miles; i think the lead group finished in 4:15 or so. The Tahoe ride has a huge charity component, roughly half of the riders are participants in our program with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Our 1800 riders raised an amazing $6.5 million for the figght against blood cancer. I'm riding another century with friends Saturday, one sponsored by a local (Lake Charles) cycling club. Real informal, no entry fee, no T-shirt, just a route to ride, a few folks to ride it with, and a few sag stops to refill your sports drinks and provide some food. Should be fun, although this will be in 90 degree weather with 90% hunidity, where Tahoe was 40 degrees/40%. No hills though, should be flat as a pancake.

bear...hope your ride went well...what with all this long distance stuff you'll be getting quite a good level of fitness on board...
Unfortunately my fitness is not at it's peak....I've been back seriously training this week only and I have quite a way to go to get real race fit....200km since sunday, so i'm hoping it'll come back fast...I'll just have to get the diet right (no booze at all!!)
The problem is that I have to go to Brisbane for work for 2 weeks in July, so that'll be a setback. It's a real hassle when work gets in the way of sport!!...I'll have to win the lottery and follow bike races around the world...yeah..
I see the tour must be just around the corner...all the drug allegations surrounding Lance armstrong surface again.....I'd be damned surprised if any of those cyclists have been clean all their careers....what they achieve defies belief. I suspect Motorola used drugs in the mid 90s simply through a friend of mine (grant), who knew when his brother was racing back in NZ between overseas rides, that he took drugs....and his performance showed it....One day they were racing a 165km stage and Stephen Swart and a Motorola team mate caught Grant up after he had made a break....on the flats Grant says they were doing 70kmh, and all Stephen said to him was "take a turn or fuck off"...yeah grant says the eyes were sparking that morning...Belgie Go Fast!!!

heres some more of the stable of bikes at my place... my oldest sons KHS Aero Comp...full 9spd Ultegra and Mavic Helium wheels...reynolds 853 steel frame...yeah I love this bike!! my youngest sons bike...Trek 1000. At the moment it just has 7spd RSX 100 with ultegra cranks and BB, but I'll put some 9 spd ultegra on it shortly...I have a full gruppo around here somewhere...A sweet little alloy bike, Shimano wheels...shame it is a little heavy at about 21lbs...notice the downtube shift for the front derailleur...year when I first put the STI on it, he couldnt push it far enough across to change chainrings, so I showed him a Lance Armstrong photo, with a bike set up just like this....one sti lever and a downtube shift as well!!!..needless to say that convinced him this set up wasnt gay!!!
