Well do you mind telling me how they can make a deal that manages to get things right then? What sort of deal do you have in mind?
I've suggested trading for Griffey. You seem pretty lukewarm on that. What else is there?
You're bringing up the theory of it all, and I'm trying to say that that's all well and good but when you look at what you actually have and what you actually need, there's no proper alternative.

Yeah, the free agent market is a little bit thin, but who really knows what the trade market is like right now? I mean, we only know who's on the block when they tell us.
But you're right, it's time to panic. Maybe you should go burn down Fenway. Or go camp outside of Larry Lucchino's house for a couple weeks. Or maybe wait a few more months and see what they end up doing before you start flipping out about it.

This is my favorite baseball site....ever... firejoemorgan.blogspot.com/The most recent entry is somewhat related to our discussion here...in any event, it comments on an article that is on the same subject we've been debating here. I'm not really posting it for any other reason than the fact that I love that fucking website.

Oh, and the Royals have now signed Reggie Sanders, Scott Elarton, Mark Redman, Doug Mientkiewicz and Joe Mays.
No, none of them are really all that good, but all of them combined show the Royals to be doing something completely different than anything they've done in recent memory. Still a crummy team, but they're at least going to be mostly actual Major League ballplayers this year. Congrats to the baseball fans in Kansas City.

That's right: they're both meaningless sets of numbers that I made up for meaningless categories that Jim Armstrong made up.
I stopped reading when I read this. Good to know that this guy thinks Kevin Youklis is going to be our new leadoff man. The ridiculous worshipping of sabermetrics continues.

Wooo, Coco Crisp has a good "WARP3", which I've never heard of until just now! I'm feeling better already. By which I mean I want to murder a kitten.

Meanwhile, Toronto's about to get Glaus for a bag of coconuts and a broken skateboard. But I guess the Sox *are* strapped for cash, so you gotta do what the market dictates...

Kevin Youkilis is good, man. Real good.
And yeah, Toronto is a force to be reckoned with. Interesting that you make a negative swipe at sabermetrics while acknowledging Toronto's rise. JP Riciardi is Billy Beane, Jr. They're not going to win anything this year, but they're on the rise, and within a couple year's they'll be very competitive with both the Yankees and Red Sox, but for a fraction of the price.
I wish my Tigers would learn something from all this.

Youklis is no lead off hitter. I think we both know that.
I'm actually the world's #1 BJ Ryan fan (honestly, I wouldn't shut up about him back in the summer of 2004 when he made his rise to glory) but I think that signing is sort of stupid, largely due to his age and they certainly could have had him for 66% of that money. Not to mention the unproven Burnett. This doesn't sound like sabermetrics, this sounds like a franchise trying to make waves and get people in the seats by showing they're willing to pay. And if this trade goes through, they're payroll will have ballooned 30 million for just 3 players, none of whom are 1st tier. Not sure how this is a better alternative to what the Sox "should" have done...

Nothing about the Burnett signing is inherently NOT sabermetrics. Just wanted to point that out. He's actually pretty good in most of the areas that sabermatricians value.
The BJ Ryan signing is actually the one that did throw me for a loop though. Yeah, he's good, but throwing all that money at him is really the opposite of what Ricciardi used to advise Billy Beane to do in Oakland. In Oakland they recognized years ago that closers were incredibly overvalued (yeah, some guys are better than others, but most Major League relievers can get through one inning with a three run lead just fine). In the past they've actually done a hell of a job of trading off their closer for ridiculous value and then promoting someone else to the closer spot, inflating their value, and then trading them off again. It's not something they can do as easily now because other GMs have become wise to it, but selling off a closer for way above value is something he's done repeatedly in the past. And that's why the Ryan signing surprised me--because Ricciardi, in the past, has talked about how much people overvalue closers.
But yeah, the Toronto ownership opened up their pocketbooks to him this year, so he may as well lure in the best players he can. And they're actually building quite a team there (Ryan, Burnett, Lyle Overbay, Troy Glaus) on top of what was already a decent team last year.

I dunno, what's Ryan's WARP3? I can't find a recent one, but for 2004 it was 4.4

How does someone like Orel Hershiser not go into the HOF on the first try?
