Picking up the keys this morning. Have packed up most stuff, only the kitchen, TV and computer to go. I'll be moving out first thing tomorrow. Niceties to look forward to- 42 degrees heat on Saturday and Sunday, no electricity until Monday and at least waiting a week for a phone connection.
See you on the dark side!

i know maarts is busy with his move, but DAMN what's going on over there's got me worried, especially since i don't savvy at all about the geography, where what's going on. for marts AND kat AND for all significant folks that scottsy left holding down the fort. it might sure seem deserted here, but i sure hope someone checks in here...

Looks very nice, Maarts!
Been whatching the news about the fires in your part of the world with some trepidation. Hope everything's OK.

All is fine, for now- would you believe it's floods here in NSW we have to worry about? The northern coast of NSW and inland in places like Bourke have received like 2/3 of their annual rainfall in 15 hours. This nation's gone off the scale in regards to the weather. Where I am was never threatened but looked like it might have because of the lengthy drought we had suffered here- the soaring temperature up to the mid-40s didn't help matters but from one moment to the next that was over.
Total death toll of the Victorian bushfires is set to 200. Shocking

I’ve written about seven ‘hey guys, how are you doing’ posts and never posted them. But two things really made me miss this place (besides the people): researching a community online and seeing their similar – but insanely active – interaction and becoming all nostalgic for what was/is here; and seeing Leonard-fucking-Cohen live a month-or-so-ago in the SECOND ROW (literally metres from the master) and missing this place to do the figurative arm-flailing excited thing. My friends are sick to death of hearing me blab on about how ‘The Partisan’ changed my life live. Considering, especially, how my life really hasn’t changed at all since… but these things are inconsequential.
I haven’t posted since 2007, but I’ve been checking in and my thoughts have been with many. This seems like a ‘geez, kat, wipe the fucking jizz off your shoulder, no-one gives a shit’, and rightfully so, but just so you know.
Facebook is down for me in the past few days so I started branching out. I spend a revolting amount of time on there, and have been in touch with Liz/angel. I’m going to be in England in the new year and hopefully will get to meet her over a few gin and tonics. At least, that’s my plan, her plans are secondary. I’m also going to San Fran! Very exciting, and will be in New York for Christmas and New Years, and I will fucking shit myself before I will stand in the cattle ranks to watch a.ball.drop, so I think getting pissed in Central Park is more of a viable option. Still, exciting! And then off to see my hoards of friends who have made the move to London, (because, who doesn’t think ‘hey, economic crisis, no jobs… that’s the place I wanna be!’) and then to Paris and somewhere on the way back… but undecided where. Any suggestions? Madrid is looking mighty appealing. Tickets have been booked, so this isn’t one of those pipe dreams that I am oh-so notorious for.
I’ve started my PhD! I got accepted into the top two universities in the country, both offered a full scholarship which meant I got to piss off my ridiculous job where I spent the last two months trying to get made redundant. Getting caught painting my nails and trimming my hair didn’t do it, and I got promoted to ridiculous heights, so the payout eluded me. Arseholes! Anyway, so without giving the nod to google and what I’m doing in a traceable-by-the-people-you-don’t-want-to-find-you-online-way, I have two amazing supervisors who are ridiculously famous and a research centre and funding, and it looks as though I’m getting a one day a week job in a film editing studio to allow me to save some money, so everything is looking up Milhouse. Dated a few people who ended up being boring twats, and so single again. But that’s better than listening to intolerable pissbuckets talk about nothing for weeks, so life is illegally enjoyable at the moment.
Oh, and also, I’m getting published! For all you USers, I will be appearing in a book on 9/11 in your local library shortly. Not the most academic of publications, but they liked my input and the majority of sales are through public and university libraries in the States. So I can fax you over an autograph to stick in the jacket of each one, or something. Me writing on 9/11… the conservatives I really despise here must be pissing their pants. But, they’ll be glad to know that the Aust. Govt is looking to censor the internet, and they’re all ‘Censorship FTW’, so I guess everything works in two ways.
And I assume everyone has heard the exciting news about Macgyver the feature coming out. Hold onto your britches.
I’m leading a very charmed existence at the moment where friends are filmmakers, politicians, academics, journalists, activists, etc, and life just seems to get better by the minute. But, I suffered a huge loss (my very, very dear and loved grandfather at Christmas just after I stopped posting here) and things haven’t been the same since, but I’ve just been living my life as he would want me to lead it… and I think I would be making him proud. Except for the few wines I’ve had tonight, but we all have to live a little/a lot. I got to dedicate written work to him which made things more final in my head, and I will be the first person in my family to graduate with a degree in April (even though I’m already in another… weird system) and I know nothing would make him prouder. And, I’m being taken around his/my nan’s town in England by relatives at the end of the year with the inheritance he left me so I just know he would have been very fucking pleased.
I don’t really have any more fun facts off the top of my drunken head… but I hope you are all well and life is fucking tops, and that the wine you will drink is better than the pondscum I’m drinking at the moment.

Oh, and my freakish knowledge re: post ColdWar houses in Australia:
We all have clay tile rooves, the only other option is Colourbond (which I think is a trademarked sort of dealy for corrugated iron made a bit more fancier), and your house, Maarts, I would garner can be dated to about 1991-1996. Clarendon Homes would have been the designer, more than likely.
Oh, and Maarts - beer! We said we'd do it and we never did. Shocking stuff! Btw, Campbelltown... there's no fucking way I'm travelling out there. If I can't see a skyscraper - or our version of it - from where I am and there's not some form of family guilt driving me, I am not meeting you there!
