If not, am sure you could apply first for the holidaymakers visa which will give you 2 years i think. 4 if you have a grandparent born in the UK (well, those were the rules when I moved)
Are you actually an Aust citizen then?

I've just tried to access the H/O website but think that's being reshuffled also. I'll come back in a bit to see if you are around to discuss.

Angel: I am already an Aus citizen (got that a while ago), so I currently have a dual citizenship. My Colombian passport is actually a hindrance, it gave me no end of trouble when I was applying for Euro & UK visas because no wants dirty Colombians in their country. I can't blame them. If I didn't have Aus citizen status, I'd be suspected of terrorism & even as it is, going through customs was a bitch.
"Says here you're Colombian?.." "yes, but I'm also Australian. Look, theres a kangaroo on my passport" "Hmmm....still, we're going to have to examine all your papers." "this is Thailand. you have no end of paedophile rings here! way to get your suspect priorities straight, bitch"
The plan is Sean & I will get married here & then beg the British to let me in. Surely they'd let me have residency if my husband is British-born? If that doesn't work, I'll have to fly out there on a visa & pop some sprogs out. Sean's dad suggested I tell them Colombia is dangerous & I want to be a refugee, but I think once they hear my accent & realise I know all the current Neighbours storylines the ruse will be up.
But cheers for your help Angel. Do you like living over in Pomland? Missing the NZ yet?

Yeah I like living in England now (recoils in horror at concept)
I do miss NZ definitely, but I turned a corner about a year ago where I lifted out of my feeling of instability and entered a very strange world of contentedness (see above)
So. I think yes, get married so long as you were going to anyway but do not underestimate the amount of crap that awaits you. I would advise saving up as much money as you can in a JOINT account. The purpose is twofold: Firstly, you show them you have enough money to live until you get a job without bluding off the state (and they wanted to know I had enough for 56 months until my WORK visa came through). Secondly, having a joint account for as long as possible comes in handy as they want you to prove the relationship history.
A marriage certificate may as well not be worth the paper it is written on, i the eyse of the immigration officials in my experience. Anyone can get married, NOT everyone can prove their relationship is real, durable and has a history that checks out.
So, go joint NOW. With EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Keep cards, love letters, photos, HISTORY.

I've heard the needing to save shiteloads of money to prove independence thing for UK citizenship before.
Thanks very much for these tips, Angel, I really appreciate it. Sean & I have had a joint account for a little while now & I actually have saved everything (including airfare tickets & some hospital admission papers that he signed for me haha).
Now that we've made the decision to eventually relocate to London or Edinburgh (where he is originally from, the dirty Scot) for a bit, we're both in that mentality & already I am anticipating the crap coming ahead. Like where we'll get married etc, if I should just apply for schools in the UK & not bother for ones here etc. I don't know.

Two days into my citizenship process I have simply decided if the British government doesn't give me residency approval, I'll just punch them in their limey face.
Where do you & the hubby live, Angel? Is it near Coventry? Maybe I'll move there too. Brumland needs all the hot bitches it can get.

Excellent. Good luck on your assessment, matie. You know you'll ace it.
