Tall ships in Chicago (Abel Uribe, Chicago Tribune / August 24, 2010) A fleet of 20 tall ships make its way to Navy Pier for the Parade of Sail event. The festival goes through Aug. 29. some of them built 200 years ago, monuments to human ingenuity, curiosity AND persistence. we went and toured them yesterday. absolutely fascinating to board and walk around those thins. 'sails' were sold out unfortunately.

it 'plays' through sunday. you can come down and board the ones which aren't out on the lake giving 40 dollar-per-person sailing excursions. THAT's what i am dying to do. be ON one of those on the lake. ....then the whole shebang exits navy pier probably looking a lot like that in those pictures. one of the ships (the pride of baltimore i think it was) said that that's when they'll fire their cannons. fuckers had 4 on-the-floor rolling cannons and 2 turret-mounted ones.
come on DOWN!

Back in 1984, I was coordinating the making of the *QUÉBEC 1984* official movie for the 450th anniversary of Jacques-Cartier's (re)discovering Canada and 60 tall ships made to trip to Québec city for the celebrations. I was lucky enough to spend two days and one night abord this one... Russian Tall Ship ... The Kruzenshtern. Funny thing is I wasn't supposed to make the trip but since this *boat* was (still is?) a military training ship, women were allowed on board but they could not stay overnight... which means that I got to replace the assistant director for that shoot And on open sea (in the St-Lawrence Gulf) with full sails like on this picture...! She was so disappointed... ;D ;D

We also got to spend a few days with the guys racing those kind of machines... Now... going 40/50 MPH may not sound very fast but when you're standing on a net 3 feet above the water with the boat going all out on one keel with a nice list... you better hang on tight!! Since the St-Lawrence is pretty narrow near Québec city, the skippers used to wait fot the right wind and go all out on practice runs with a full set of sails and then get towed back to Québec city while drinking champagne... It was fun but also a good time to remember the first lesson you learn when you get on a sail boat for the first time... *One hand for the boat and one hand for you*!!

The Kruzenshtern....OMFG! that's too cool! man i'd die for that....well, almost. tho it's still not an experience without any sort of hardship...if you've got a fair number of crew, quarters get sorta, ahem, intimate. especially overnight. rough seas...meet our friend RALPH! we've gone sailing 3-4 times...a few up across green bay, once up and down trakai lake in lithuania (incredible!), where we hired onto a 'sailing trip' 2-3-4 hours worth and they were all heaven. that kruzenshtern, hard to fathom (!) why that would have to be a 'military ship'...yeah commissioned solely to take some bigwig generals from their dachas across the black sea. but FOUR masts! that's one hell of an impressive ship!

About the Kruzenshtern....
I should have said naval cadets sailmanship instead of military ship...
Or something to that effect...
The wine is Italian BTW!!
