Music-wise, that is. This question is directed more toward conservatives seeing as how pretty much all performers are (gak!) loudmouth liberals. I can enjoy, say, Elton John, Bono, Pearl Jam and Coldplay in spite of their contemptable political stances. But it's usually in the back of my mind how I hold my nose when they flap their jaws. And who asks them to spout off their so well-informed opinions anyway? Since when are these inflated egos the foremost authority on world events and why do they get treated as such? "Shut up and sing"!

I hate it when an artist comes out with some very ill - considered political stance, and it sounds just like a gigantic pose. That shits me off, because it just sounds so false and fake. I can largely ignore that though.
When the same superficiality creeps into the music, thats when I stop liking the artist. I generally love music with a strong political conviction, especially when it's a worthwhile cause... I'm thinking of defining pieces of music like Peter Gabriel's "Biko" or the entirety of Midnight Oil's Diesel and Dust... such is political music with conviction, understanding and sensitivity, and it's REAL.
Politics in music as a pose just gives me the shits.

I guess it's better if their spouting off keeps it out of their music. (Although I do admire U2's "Pride", for instance.) I just don't know where they get off with their self-important thinking that anyone gives a shit what their view is about the environment or war or genocide. The music biz is meant to be about having fun (well, after getting rich and scoring chicks, that is), not about being all serious and getting your undies in a wad if some African kids are starving. I also think trumping up how much you give to charity is just about being self-congratulatory.

Strictly music-wise? No. There's a few things that seem alittle contrived that bug me...but on the whole no...wait I take that back. The exception is "we'll put a boot up your ass" country. I can't stand it. I hate Toby Keith but not exactly for his politics. He's a democrat, you know... I hate him becuase he's a moron.

I hate political country.

Would you hate it if it was liberal?

Would you hate it if it was liberal? Honestly, probably not. I equate that sort of blind nationalism with the same extremist mindset we claim to be at war with...while there certainly is an extreme POV on the left, I don't think it's any surprise I'd be more sympathetic on that side. Plus New Country sucks.

As far as I am concerned the US is a "free" country, in theory, and we have the right to express our views. I don't care if a performer or anyone else pontificates on their viewpoint as long as they respect my right to do the same if I so choose.
I prefer to go by the saying that it is better to keep my mouth shut and appear stupid than to open my mouth and prove it. (Of course, Art is a living breathing example of how to prove "stupid" no matter if his mouth is open or closed!!!)

Have I stated one opinion of mine regarding world events on this board yet? Nope. As for who asked me to spout off, I did. It's my board. One that's not meant to be taken so damn seriously!

God forbid someone might be inspired to get involved in a worthwhile cause as a result of Bono's publicizing it, right? If the "music biz" is about nothing more than "having fun, scoring chicks and getting rich" then I don't know why anyone bothers taking music seriously. Maybe that's okay with you, maybe it's just not important to you...I wouldn't bother with it, though, if I really thought that was what it was all about. Do the words "artistric integrity" have ANY MEANING WHATSOEVER to you?
But then again, that you'd even use the term "scoring chicks" tells me more than I need to know about where you're coming from.
