The best series of party album I know- anything from obscure electro, breakbeats, cheesy pop, punk and even Dolly Parton thrown in the mix. The best parts of the mix are the ones where a set of vocals/raps are transplanted on top of a different tune -like Beastie Boys' rap on Intergalactic on the music of Herbie Hancock's Rockit, Jamiroquay's Supersonic morphs with Georgie Moroder/Donna Summer's I Feel Love, Destiny Child's Independent Women with 10CC's Dreadlock Holiday or (the best one), Public Enemy's Rebel Without A Pause meets prime Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass! Mary- Godspeed! Dead Can Dance! I am in total awe! NP: Von Magnet- El Sexo Surrealista

Why can't all radio/video network friendly music sound like The Killers? Yeah, I can't disagree here. My problem with the album is that it's very hit or miss with me. About half of it is amazing (in fact I've had "Jenny..." stuck in my head all day) while some of it is...well...very forgettable. I would say that it would have made the best EP ever, but it's not like that was ever the Killers intent. I said something elsewhere about how the mainstreaming of modern indie/garage/80s revive isn't necessarily a bad thing -- like Riley said, how can one complain about hearing this or "Float On" or "Take Me Out" on the airwaves when for the last 8 years the alternative (and reality) was such utter crap. I just tend to worry about where it's going. I read recently that the much much ballyhooed Indie 103.1 in LA (who plays exactly who you'd think) was actually in some way affiliated with ClearChannel. Something about it being station with a different format before becoming affiliated with CCE, who then suggested the change to the modern mainstream indie format. I just find something about that's not quite right, and I can't put my finger on it.

i hears ya, Jaysus. that Killers album is filled with neat songs. i'm giving full credit to Res for introducing me to them.
i have some hope that Nick Cave's new album will be good. I've recently re-appreciated The Boatman's Call. very affecting, if you're in the mood for it.

as for the Godspeed EP, that's probably their pinnacle moment. short and sweet, but on closer inspection, not so short and not so sweet. 2 lengthy songs, one of which is super cleverly concise, and the other of which distills the essential Godspeed sound in a sprawling peaks'n'valleys getup.

My condolences as well, patten. Our old boy, a big Golden named Jimmy, was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of September. We were told a month, maybe two, but we had to put him down yesterday afternoon. Would have been 15 in March. Third time we’ve been through this and no, it never gets any easier.
Last disc played: Finn Bros. – Everyone is Here

That's a decent summary. It's the tightest thing they've yet done. Though blatant plagiarism of Gorecky should be noted. The Boatman's Call is solid, with great ballads and typically strong, obsessive lyrics. Although the last track is one of the worst songs ever recorded.

I resolved long ago never to own another dog. It's just too damn hard 'cos they don't live long enough.

Same thoughts here on the loss of your pets.....leaves a big hole that might feel so deep that others can't fathom it. We can,,,,,we can.

Patten and Drum, I'm so sad to hear your news. S'true - no matter how many times one goes through this, it never gets any easier at all. My thoughts are with you both. Many who have spent a lifetime in it can tell us less of love than a child that lost a dog yesterday. - Thornton Wilder
