Patti Smith Group Heart Fleetwood Mac Poison Motley Crue Skid Row :-)
Odd that even though rock n'roll originated in America, the Brits perfected it. I suppose America has better solo artists though... apart from Bowie, who kicks everyone's ass combined!

OK...here's my North American list. Kinda rough, I didn't have much time to think it through. 1) X 2) The Velvet Underground 3) Sleater-Kinney 4) Creedence Clearwater Revival 5) (tie) Television 5) (tie) Big Star 7) Sonic Youth 8) The Byrds 9) (tie) Bad Brains 9) (tie) The Replacements 11) Pearl Jam 12) Swans 13) Jefferson Airplane 14) Godspeed You Black Emperor! 15) Metallica I felt weird putting Sleater-Kinney at #3, but the more I think about it, damn straight, they're THAT good. Absolutely one of the greats. I also feel kinda bad that Metallica are the ONLY metal band that snuck on here - metal is always so severely and painfully underrepresented on these rs surveys - but I really couldn't think who else would go here. Anthrax? Megadeth? Neurosis? Slayer? They just don't cut it, not top 15 material. Bad Brains, however, should be on ALL your lists, motherfuckers!!! Cheers, M

I'm going to do my best here, but this is also just kind of off the top of my head again. I'll try to not change it later though unless I make some glaring mistake, since its actually being tallied this time. I'm going by a combination of greatness and personal preference though, just because there are too many bands I love too much to leave off, but I also just can't bring myself to leave CCR off even though strictly by personal preference they wouldn't make the cut... 1) The Velvet Underground 2) X 3) Sonic Youth 4) The Pixies 5) Television 6) Red Hot Chili Peppers 7) Nirvana 8) Big Star 9) Wilco 10) REM 11) The White Stripes 12) Creedence Clearwater Revival 13) Pearl Jam 14) The Replacements 15) The Stooges Bands that I really really really wanted to include but couldn't find a place for: Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma (god damn I wanted to include Mission of Burma), Hüsker Dü, Soundgarden, Talking Heads, Aerosmith, The Arcade Fire (I can't express how much I love them, but its just way too early to put them on a list like this), TOOL, and, um, Prison Rodeo.

Are the Stooges and Iggy & the Stooges being tallied as the same band? I mean, they were almost the same band, but not strictly so. I'm just curious.

Wow, I didn't expect so many lists right off the bat ... remember guys, you've until NEXT Friday to vote, so you don't need to rush these lists. You can make changes until the polls close. Rocky -- any vote that lists the Stooges will count as a vote for the Stooges. So yes, Iggy and the Stooges counts towards "the Stooges" as America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band. Bow -- How did Neil Young and Crazy Horse make your list when Petty & the Heartbreakers or Bruce and the E Street didn't? And on the subject of those kind of bands, Elvis Costello and the Attractions have to rank as one of rock's finest ensembles as well. But again, being British they're a subject for another day.

I think Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble will be on my list. The threesome remained the same and Double Trouble even continued on after his death, so that's pretty legit.
Haven't seen ZZ Top anywhere...

My list is seperating current bands vs all-time bands
Top 15 American Rock Bands of All Time
15- 10
15. Minor Threat- The Revolution was never ment to be televised and so much of what makes me think of DIY/Straight Edge comes from the passion of the music this band displayed and the unrelenting sense of danger under the watchful eye of authority
14. Mission of Burma- "That's When I Reach For My Revolver" is a personal trainer screaming at you to quit being so fucking lazy it's the workout you always needed but were too consumed with bullshit to realize Chaos and Volume nuff said.
13.Guns N Roses- The Most Dangerous Band on The Planet for a good 2-4 years when they hit the stage the police reacted as if GNR were NWA(who would be on the list if it wasn't just a rock band list) They made me believe in rock stars
12. Guided By Voices- The Drunks all-time favorite band who don't like Paul Weterberg, the catalouge deserves it's own book to discuss just what the hell was going on in the lyrics and production everything is simple and yet expansive you try to write such killer tunes like Pollard in 2 min sets.
11. Talking Heads- no band defines work in progress like the Heads you can't go through life being motionless always seemed to be the message I got out of it. They still remain a bit of a myth to me espically on the re-issue live album did they really take on all those generes and suceed at most of them.
10. The Doors- A crowd can only follow if there willing to be lead-William Burroughs. Every single band who came after in search of the truth and found excess knows who the real leader will always be

Velvet Revolver is proof enough to me that GNR COULD have been the greatest American band of all time, if only Axl hadn't been such a douche. As is, they have one album, which is, IMO, the best album of the 80s, but they never really followed it up. It's also worth noting that in GNR's prime, they were "bigger than Nirvana and Metallica at their peaks, combined."
I put Fugazi over Minor Threat because of longevity, but I may change my mind by next Friday...

Favorite "leader-oriented" bands (any country)!!
(1) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (2) Elvis Costello and the Attractions (3) Graham Parker and the Rumor (4) Neil Young and Crazy Horse (5) Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band (6) David Bowie and Tin Machine (!!!..just kidding....except for a few songs on their debut, they were pretty darn awful!!) (7) Iggy and the Stooges (8) Howard Devoto [Magazine]..yes, I know it was a true 'band' but damn, that was really Howards post-Buzzcocks vision (9) same with Paul Weller and the Jam....yes, Foxton et al were great, but again, this was Weller's band......through and through.......
..hey are the Pretenders USA or UK?......Chrissie Hynde is from Ohio, then lived as a writer in UK...and I'm pretty sure a couple other initial members were from UK?..what do we do with these hybrids?...if they count, I definitely want the Pretenders in my top 15......
.......can't count Graham Parker and the Rumour..they're from UK
