Strat -- Yeah, I can certainly see the links between these bands. But I can't understand why you've got the Clash at 15 instead of 1!
OK, the polls are still open, but I'm gonna start compiling the final list now ... this is gonna be interesting ...

Ok, this one isn't gonna be a blowout, and a lot of people are gonna be surprised at a good chunk of these results. Let's just say that right now, U2 is ahead of the Rolling Stones, and the band in number one only has about a fifty point lead.
In other words, if you haven't voted yet, go ahead and do so NOW! You've got until, well, whenever I start back up on this tomorrow. So if you haven't already weighed in, go ahead and speak up ... you never know who you might help, or hurt!

50 point lead!? Can I list my #1 choice twice in a row and dump the Stones? (Seems like a fair enough question...)

OK, now that it's more legible ... here's a few of my thoughts on the results. First off, Brit-pop is dead. Radiohead did the best of any nineties band, but they transcended the Brit-pop lable a long time ago, if it ever really applied anyway. None of their peers even came close to the top spots. Post-punk, on the other hand, is alive and well, as are the giants of the sixties and early seventies. The Clash and U2 both seem to be clearly ensconced in the top tier of bands, garnering support from posters of almost all backgrounds and tastes. The Beatles were impossible to beat for one simple reason -- damn near everyone had them on their lists, and generally within the top ten! I had really thought that the Who might have taken this title, simply b/c of how many people had them in the top three places. But ultimately, the Fab Four still represent the rock and roll concensus. If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that the Beatles just have to be in any conversation about best bands (unless your name is Riley, in which case you think rock and roll was invented somewhere around 1978 ). Much to my surprise (and joy), the Clash and U2 have earned themselves a spot at the table as well. In addition to topping the expected lists, the Only Band That Matters showed up further down in bunches of lists. If there was one thing that really contrasted this list with the US assemblage, it was that concensus. The Beatles and the Who both garnered more points than the VU did, and everyone down to Radiohead pulled in more support than did the number two finishers (R.E.M., Talking Heads, Pixies) in the earlier balloting. And (to my surprise actually) there were fewer bands nominated in this list -- 92 versus 113! We started this off by acknowledging that the Brits really did rock bands well, and we seem to be talking about the same short list. So that was a lot of fun for me ... I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on the results here ...

Ken, fantastic job....utterly fantastic..not surprised at all that the Beatles prevailed, which I'm sure for the postpunk generation as Mary that result will make her/them gag!!.......that being said, I am surprised Oasis came below Pulp in terms of the 90s britpop contingent...though Different Class is a virutally perfect work. Also, the kinks will probably never break the top five, though I strongly believe that had has much if not more talent that the Who or Zepplin......I just think they were a bit too contrary and too british for the US populace (plus it didn't help that they were banned from the US for five years)..........also though I very much have enjoyed Joy Division and the Cure through the mope-rock years, it intrigues/frustrates me that a band as amazingly talented and creative as XTC doesn't garner a higher rating...............

I was actually pleased with how well XTC did -- they made the top fifteen, after all! Not at all bad for a band whose lead singer suffers from stage fright. I was also surprised at how well Pulp did vis a vis Blur, the Verve, and Oasis. Gonna have to pick up a couple of their LPs, methinks.

I'm heartened to at least see the name 'Taste/Rory Gallagher' at #55 even though I was the only one (to my knowledge, tho I'm prrretty sure..) vote for that criminally under-recognized Irishman...
Of course had the esteemed Glen or the equally esteemed Don von Aying voted here, well, then he coulda tracked a bit higher...
...and Thin Lizzy at # 30, yesss!
Great job, Ken!
And thank ya!

Great job and thanks again Ken! Wouldn't go as far as to call Britpop dead but that if we all got together somewhere, more people were likely to have a good time if there was some Beatles, Clash or The Who on the stereo...
Which reminded me- my first post on this board was spot on!

Yeah maarts, I really thought that one of those three bands would be further down the list ... in particular, I thought that the Beatles wouldn't come out in the top three. Guess I was wrong!
Brit-pop may not be "dead" but it sure has limited appeal! And this list was all about generating cross-generational appeal, something that none of those bands (aside from Radiohead) managed.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense that this would be the case. That's because there are about 10 artists on that list which almost everyone voted for. Simply because the Brits had the 'better' bands. Whereas with the American list, aside from VU, it was anyone's guess who would make the top spots so everyone was voting for a wider variation of bands. Does that make sense?
btw, I own at least 1 album from 33 of those 92 bands. U2 holds my record for 10 albums.

Even though I voted for the Beatles in my top 10, I didn't want them to win. I wanted the winner to be a surprise, I think we all predicted the fab-4 was going to win this. I was hoping for Zep, U2 or maybe [wishful thinking] the Smiths to win.
