But anyway, I suppose I could say the same about egalitarianism and affirmative action, couldn't I? Some people will be very rich, and some very poor because of our Constitution, correct? They will be poor and not have things that other people have. Is that fair? Not necessarily but that's the price we pay for having a free market. The strong survive. That's how capitalism works. Not the best form of government there is, but surely the best this world has to offer. So some win and some lose. It's still the best country on earth. That's the price you pay for a free society, right?
Melon ~ I'm curious to understand how you can reconcile your view of the world we live in and your christian ideals ... Or are we just powerless to work on those ideals and we must content ourselves with the situation as it is and wait for our ultimate fate to be decided in the "afterlife" ... ??

I just wanted to pop in and thank everyone for their detailed and passionate Springsteen recommendations. I took notes! I have a feeling I might end up starting with the 'essential' collection, but I'm pretty intrigued by the write-ups on some of his other albums too. Who knows, maybe I'm a giant Springsteen fan just waiting to happen! Thanks guys.

I personally feel that Switzerland is the best country on earth, because of these two girls I saw at the Chinese takeout place last night.

OK, enough on this board. I don't understand in the least how anyone wouldn't agree with at least 90% of what I said.
Ken, I said nothing about abortion in the 90s and today. Nothing. Out of all I wrote, that's your response? You must not have read it because you hardly took issue with anything I said.

I'll be scoring this as soon as Ken gives me the green light. Maybe some more people will submit lists.

How many lists have been submitted so far, Melon?
I need to post mine, too, for that matter.

re: "screwing the pooch"
i believe it originated in the early days of the space program, the Mercury astronauts, and is indeed, just a softened, more polite company version of the original "fucking the dog". it may have come about earlier, among the Air Force and Navy test pilots, who of course went on to become the first astronauts.
much like we got the sanitized "snafu" and "fubar" from the soldiers in WWII, shorter, less offensive acronyms for "situation normal, all fucked up", and "fucked up beyond all recognition". a soldier says"what a snafu", and everyone knew just what he was talking about.
ain't the english language great?

Heh - achn2b, you just caused me to have to go back and read that whole section of the thread again! That was pretty good!
I can't pick 50. I just can't. Still interested in the results, though. Carry on...

Let's make a deadline, Ken. How 'bout a week from Saturday?

Let's make a deadline, Ken. How 'bout a week from Saturday? OK guys, this is the final deadline for the fifty greatest singles poll ... you've got till next Saturday (that's March 25, just to avoid any confusion). So the deadline isn't tomorrow, it's NEXT Saturday. And if you can't come up with the full fifty, well, just submit whatever you've got and we'll put that into the matrix. And I promise that the next one of these that I start won't be as lengthy ... something like a top ten bad albums by great artists, or somethin' ...

I suggest we do a top 25 albums of the 90s list like we did over at RS.com. It would be interesting to see the comparison with the old list, which is over on the Rolling Stone Project Take 2 on pg. 8. Or a top 25 albums of this decade.
