Dolly: www.richardthompson-music.com/Tour.aspI hope to god that one of the full band gigs are somewhere near enough to get there and see RT in his other element... The effort will be rewarded, I guarantee you.

Agh! No Coventry this time (though shouldn't be living here by that time). Birmingam's damned close and where we usually go for gigs - but it's the ol fella's birthday, damnit. Not sure I can pull that one. I'll have to be super fucking charming to do the diva out of his big day for some of my 'old man music'.
I need to start plotting.

Oh pleease, you're always super fucking charming ANYway, aincha? ;D
...I mean, he dug him the first time he saw him, didn't he? Solo acoustic, wasn't it? And Thompson gone electric with full band, is honestly off the charts. 'Right impressed' I could swear I heard jllm saying (if in paraphrase).

Oh pleease, you're always super fucking charming ANYway, aincha? ;D Yikes, it sounds like a bad thing when you put the f-word in there like that, RocDoc Yeah he was highly impressed with the accoustic set we saw at the WAC. I diiiiiiid jokily mention the gig to him - y'know just to plant the idea for future 'working on', but he huffed about preferring the 'gentle more melodic' accoustics to the loud rawcus electric wank-strewn stuff. Personally, I think he sensed his birthday balti at the local curry house is in jeopardy and he was getting in the excuses early. What I should have done was bought him 'surprise' tickets. 'Surprise! We're going to see RT for your birthday! Surprise! YOu have to drive all the way to Birmingham!' Hmmm. I aint giving up that easily though.

I like how you're talking about this on a web board where jllm can easily read these discussions.

The local broadcast of Austin City Limits had Ray Davies on just last night....and the damned thing was out of effing synch!
He was honestly in great voice but the delay bugged the shit out of me. Off it went

Understandable RD.
Ray was great as ever - even though ditzy me forgot the tickets so we ended up arriving half way through the opening song (I'm Not Like Everybody Else). Grrr.
No Arthur or even VGPS this time - but he did play Come Dancing!!!!!!!!! I may write more later in the week when I'm not as time constrained.

So you had a good time at the show? That's cool he played Come Dancing! Despite what Holzman says, I think it's a cool pop number.
Bummer no Arthur or VGPS, especially since he's playing in England - those two album are so distinctly British, you think he'd hearken back to them some to throw the home crowd a bone so to speak. Did he play any 'Something Else' songs? His set list in the states were similar, but those 'arena rock' albums seem to get more love over here than in the UK. Hence my reasoning that he'd play the more British albums for y'all.
We need to start some sort of petition for Ray to start playing the Arthur songs! Hell, he should at least play Victoria.
That sucks you left your tickets - it's kinda funny though - but at least you got to see pretty much the whole set. How were your seats?

So,
Dolly, Fuzz, Ken - how y'all doing? Well anyone who reads this for that matter. Seems like it's been awhile since we all chatted around here. Guess the boards are kinda in a lull right now, but I just wanted to stop by my favorite thread and say hi to all the folk that post here, or used to. Phil, if you still lurk around here, hello. Ryo, Bow - y'all post here sometimes, so hi to you too.
Fuzz, how's the daughter and fatherhood? Figure out what's going on? Have you become a pro at changing the diapers yet?
Ken, ever listen to the Kinks anymore? Now that new Mac Book Pros have finally been released, I may go and get one. If/When I do, the offer is still out there for you for me to send you 'Muswell Hillbillies'. The one thing holding me up w/ buying one now is that I just dropped $600 for a lawyer b/c I got a reckless driving ticket - I was going 88 in a 55. In Virginia, they don't fuck around with that. In some cases, they even through you in jail! I'd really be pissed off if I wind up in jail for a fucking speeding ticket! Anyway, from everyone I spoke with, they said you have to get a lawyer in VA for a ticket like that. Hopefully he'll be able to lower it to a simple speeding ticket, and no jail.
Anyway, hope are y'all are well.

Hey Paul -- I've been tied up with the "real" world lately, and haven't had that much to say here. But I have gotten Give the People What They Want, State of Confusion, and One From the Road (live c. '79), and I still find the Kinks' late seventies/early eighties stuff to be my personal favorite period for them. It's just so much more enjoyable, and the production is sooooo much better. Also, I was just listening to the live version of David Watts, and couldn't help but notice that it sounds like the Davies brothers took more than a cue or two from the Jam's steller cover. I'll probably be out of the loop most of today, but I'll try to post more later this week.

Anyway, hope are y'all are well. Hey Paul! Am well thanks - once again my Internet time is limited as I lead my lambs to the slaughter of death that is the exam hall. You won't stop me posting come summer. I hadn't realised you had replied to the last post I wrote - forgive me my rudeness! Yeah I was really disappointed in the lack of songs from my favourite Kinks albums, but I was kind of expecting it - aside from VGPS - he normally plays something from there - often a medley. Ah well - next time perhaps... Currently trying to debate whether or not to go see Interpol's tour in August. I'm on holida - and last time they were great - but I'm not overly excited by what I've heard in terms of new stuff by them. Been to/going to any gigs of late, Paul?

I'm right there with Ken, but Ken Sleepwalker/Misfits/Low Budget era are also damn good stuff..hey Paul!!! I need to d/l those three, too. They seem like they'd also be a good fit for me within the Kinks katalog. Paul, Dolly, I know that you guys love the (poorly produced IMHO) early singles and the buccolic (but admittedly rather boring) middle period (Village Green, etc.), but I think that the most enjoyable stuff Davies has ever done was after punk kicked rock and roll in the collective ass, and some American lassie named Chrissie reminded him what rock's all about. BTW, IMHO the Kinks are perhaps the best covered band in rock. There are a ton of great versions of Kinks tunes out there, from the Pretenders absolutely amazing "Stop Your Sobbing" through Dar Williams doing the oft-overlooked "Better Days" as a winsome folksong to Van Halen's killer "You Really Got Me" and through the Jam's bitter "David Watts," the Kinks are probably the only really great rock band I can think of where the problem with making a "tribute" album of already released covers wouldn't be a matter of finding enough decent ones, but rather narrowing down the huge field of candidates. Yeah, there are some individual performers out there who've been similarly well covered (a couple of guys named Dylan and Springsteen come to mind), but for other bands, particularly bands who've had succesful careers both critically and commercially, there's damn little competition.
