Um, if it were for Kurt following the Melvins around like a lost little puppy dog and being so enomoured with them, I just don't really see that Nirvana would have happened. Yeah, but Oasis probably wouldn't exist if not for the Inspiral Carpets would you argue their as important becuase of it? I know I know you don't like oasis, doesn't matter.

Beck is terribly unimportant. Occasionally he rocks, but mostly no.

The fact is, every band can trace influence from another. Name one band that was wholly original from the first and I'll show you a person without musical hindsight.

I like Oasis quite a bit actually.
The deal with Kurt though is that he tried out for the Melvins, wanted desperately to be in the Melvins, and carried around their guitar amps. They were his idols, the ultimate cool guys when he was in high school so, dude, just from reading about the guy I think they pretty much motivated him to do what he did.
I can answer that question for you kMc and they are called Kraftwerk.
I also think that Beck is very important and one of the more stellar artists of the last few years that has been very consistent.
I also would not agree that Ministry was insignificant as they had huge hits and made the ultimate goth song "Everyday is Halloween" and had a great deal of influence on the industrial rock scene.

I think the same can be said for Noel & Insprial Carpets and the point is no matter who inspired Kurt or Noel to do what they did they still had ability to take it to someplace bigger.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain why Beck is important... Is any music REALLY important to anyone other than the person doing the listening? Not saying so, just asking. I mean, it's all pretty subjective. Beck was not important to me until Sea Change, and even now I'd say that Beck's not important TO ME except for that album.

But it's kinda snooty to flat out say "Beck is not important". He's not important TO YOU, fine and dandy.

JAC -- I think you're confusing "important" with "meaningful." An important album is (IMHO) one that has an objective significance in music history or development, while a meaningful album is one that the listener finds subjective significance in.
Thus, I can argue that Murmer is an important album, and that Up is a very meaningful album to me.

ALL bands/artists have influences, even if they stretch all the way back to Bach. Noone who doesn't love music gets into music and that love ALWAYS reveals itself as an influence or two.

I see what you're saying and I agree in the end whether or not it gets your goat is the number one thing...but how boring is that for conversational purposes? I do believe honest impact on the music industry as a whole can measured. Can you deny Nevermind's impact or import even if you don't particularly likethe album? I can admit Velvet Underground is an important band even though I don't like them that much...and also feel just how important they were is up for debate but they are undeniably important to some extent. I honestly can't see how Beck has changed the landscape of music. He's been very creative, he's made some really good albums but even at his biggest, after Odelay, I don't see any real influence over the whole of music.
