Yeah, that's the same track. Kicks soooooo much ass. OK, I haven't heard the rest of this album, but that song is fucking incredible. I can't argue with it at all. Hmmm...maybe I'll drop that on you tonight then.

BTW, do you have any White Stripes or Drive-By Truckers? Just curious as to what you think of each.
Have 2 White Stripes albums (Elephant and White Blood Cells) but no Drive By Truckers. Dig the Stripes. Always have since my first listen. I think my favorite song of theirs is "There No Home For You Here." Also dig "I Fought Pirahnas" off the first album.

All right my list is so belated that it's going to be totally redundant. I considered intentionally choosing songs that no one had mentioned yet, but that wouldn't really be a fair representation of my list. So, repetitive and all, here it is:
1) The Mercy Seat - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Tender Prey) 2) Teenage Riot - Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation) 3) Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (Highway 61 Revisited) 4) We Always Knew - Black Heart Procession (3) 5) Baba O'Riley - The Who (Who's Next) 6) Straight Outta Compton - NWA (Straight Outta Compton) 7) Welcome to the Jungle - GNR (Appetite for Destruction) 8) Safe European Home - The Clash (Give 'em Enough Rope) 9) Age of Consent - New Order (Power Corruption and Lies) 10) Dig Me Out - Sleater-Kinney (Dig Me Out) 11) Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine) 12) In-Between Days - The Cure (Head on the Door) 13) Memphis, Egypt - The Mekons (Rock and Roll) 14) That's When I Reach For My Revolver - Mission of Burma (Signals Calls and Marches) 15) Bright Yellow Gun - Throwing Muses (University) 16) N.W.O. - Ministry (Psalm 69) 17) Sonny's Burning - The Birthday Party (Mutiny) 18) Rid of Me - PJ Harvey (Rid of Me) 19) What's Going On - Marvin Gaye (What's Going On) 20) She Is Beyond Good and Evil - The Pop Group (Y) 21) Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy (Jailbreak) 22) Orgasm Addict - The Buzzcocks (Singles Going Steady) 23) Waiting Room - Fugazi (13 Songs) 24) Non-Alignment Pact - Pere Ubu (The Modern Dance) 25) Search and Destroy - The Stooges (Raw Power)
Something like that.
Cheers, M
you're no good (esg, a south bronx story)

24. U2 - "A Sort Of Homecoming" - The Unforgettable Fire I love U2, but how did this make the list instead of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Zoo Station," "Zooropa" or even "Beautiful Day?" For that matter, "Gloria" from October is better than this piece of murk. Not a bad opener, but from a band who has made so many great ones, I can't see picking this. I'd like to write some kind of defence of the whole ambient thing here, but I actually don't get murk from this track. Colouring, a certain type of chiaroscuro, but not murk. Originally fell in love with this track, along with the rest of The Unforgettable Fire album, on a cheap Walkman to the bomb blast lightning waltz of a North Atlantic winter. TUF has sometimes been described as a European record, but it's not the same Europe as Achtung Baby and Zooropa, metropolitan and Continental. It’s maritime and coastal. Buffeting wind and sea spray on rock. The weather-beaten majesty of "A Sort of Homecoming" is the perfect lead-in to this.

Buffeting wind and sea spray on rock. The weather-beaten majesty of "A Sort of Homecoming" is the perfect lead-in to this. I can see this completely. The first time I fell in love with The Unforgettable Fire was on a cold foggy late fall day in Germany. I was playing it while driving to or from work, I believe, and the sound perfectly captured the environment. All that said and agreed, I still find A Sort of Homecoming to sound murky (esp. when compared to the chiming clarity of the live version on Wide Awake in America). I should note that if I were ranking every opener in my 800 or so albums, this would probably make the top 100, it's just that it would be behind almost every other U2 opener.

A few thoughts on M's list ... I'm just deleting out anything that I've already commented on, or not. 1) The Mercy Seat - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (Tender Prey) Knew this was coming from me, but I'm surprised it's all the way up here. Waaaaaay too long, IMO, and not enough lyrical variety (the very definition of repetition). Wouldn't make my top 100, but I understand why M likes it.2) Teenage Riot - Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation) We just might have a winner here -- it's been on almost every list (except mine).3) Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (Highway 61 Revisited) Another prime contender to take the title. Bob's best.4) We Always Knew - Black Heart Procession (3) Was this the track you included on that comp? If so, then I can't argue one bit.5) Baba O'Riley - The Who (Who's Next) Classic. Perfect.6) Straight Outta Compton - NWA (Straight Outta Compton) I can understand this, but it doesn't do it for me.7) Welcome to the Jungle - GNR (Appetite for Destruction) Zzzzzzzzzzzzz ...8) Safe European Home - The Clash (Give 'em Enough Rope) Wow -- didn't expect this one to come in here. Figured you'd have opted for London Calling, but you'll get no argument at all here.9) Age of Consent - New Order (Power Corruption and Lies) Another prime contender to take the whole thing. DED will scratches his head. 10) Dig Me Out - Sleater-Kinney (Dig Me Out) Great choice! I love S-K. 11) Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine) Meh. NIN didn't do it for me in 1990, and they probably never will. 12) In-Between Days - The Cure (Head on the Door) Great choice ... wish I'd remembered this one myself. 13) Memphis, Egypt - The Mekons (Rock and Roll) Interesting choice, fits your taste perfectly. 14) That's When I Reach For My Revolver - Mission of Burma (Signals Calls and Marches) 15) Bright Yellow Gun - Throwing Muses (University) Wow -- didn't you just get this in the last couple of weeks? If so, high praise indeed. 16) N.W.O. - Ministry (Psalm 69) Did you know that Al Jourgensen lives east of El Paso on a ranch? Has a studio out there. He comes into town regularly and eats at a b-b-q place that's right on the Texas/NM border. By all accounts, a pretty cool guy. His music bores me to tears, BTW. 17) Sonny's Burning - The Birthday Party (Mutiny) Nick who? 18) Rid of Me - PJ Harvey (Rid of Me) Excellent choice -- Jesus would be proud of you. 19) What's Going On - Marvin Gaye (What's Going On) Great call on this one! I now feel like I should go back and amend my own list to reflect this selection. 20) She Is Beyond Good and Evil - The Pop Group (Y) So she's the uber-menchen? Good call, though. 21) Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy (Jailbreak) 22) Orgasm Addict - The Buzzcocks (Singles Going Steady) 23) Waiting Room - Fugazi (13 Songs) 24) Non-Alignment Pact - Pere Ubu (The Modern Dance) 25) Search and Destroy - The Stooges (Raw Power) Ah, Mary's roots show through at the bottom of the list ... excellent punk openers all.
In a way, I'm surprised that there weren't a few more post-punk selections there, Mary. Gang of Four's "Ether" in particular is conspicuous by its absence. But all in all, you're the only person on the board who would've picked these 25 songs, which nicely reflect your taste. Just like with DED and Rocky, I can quibble with selections or order (and why isn't there anything from Bowie on here?!), but in the end that's just a matter or our respective tastes.
This will be an interesting poll to total up ... does this Friday sound like a good place to close the polls, or do you guys want one more week?

So far everyone's list has had at least one "Doh! why didn't I think of that?!" choice....but I shall not edit my list.
