I'm gathering a firmer interest in the Mountains Goats' The Sunset Tree... definitely like what i have heard of it so far, some gritty stuff by the sunds of it... thinking if I come across some spare cash I might pick it up!

Thorn seriously what's with the love for Mogwai lite? That record sucks.....that band sucks......I always shake my head in disbelief when people tell me that they like that band. EITS it's quite possibly the worst most boring of any post rock band I have ever heard. It's a good thing that they get alot of accolades live, because their records just bore me to tears.

I really prefer their first album,"Those who know the truth shall die, those who know the truth shall live forever", a lot more than the 2nd. It has more of a raw, dynamic edge, and of course, it actually swells and builds & develops a wee bit of jammin, as opposed to the nigh-ambient quality of "The Earth is not a cold dead place".
But you gotta understand - Becoming excited is not a qualifier for me to like something. Have you ever listened to Brian Eno's Thursday Afternoon? Or Neroli? These albums make "The Earth is not a cold dead place" seem like speedmetal, by contast. My point is the only reason I enjoy EITS's 2nd and extremely calm album, is much for the same reasons I might like to take a long hot soak in the tub. Also I don't sit around paying attention to it -- it's just on, in the background, and before I know it, it's over. Kinda nice.
I'll tell you what bored me to tears, though: "Govt Commissions", Mogwai's latest. I'll keep spinning it some more, hoping to find something worthwhile in it's sedative-like compositions. But I'm already considering it trading it in . . .for something with more, I don't know, vibrancy to it. But I wouldn't trade in my EITS, I just find it relaxing.
I do like the older Mogwai I've heard, however. But they sure are substandard to the Emperors of that scene, Godspeed, IMO.

True, in my opinion noone is Godspeed......and it's not ambient music that bores me to tears. Just EITS.........I've never heard such disingenious fey crap. I can't explain why, but they are honestly right up there with Guns N Roses as the most annoying twats for me.

The live version of "Like Herod" on Govt. Commisions easily makes it worth owning.

I didn't bother with Government Commissions, but I really have loved quite alot of Mogwai's stuff... Young Team is straight up wonderful, Come On Die Young is kinda so - so and a bit weak in places, but i am quite found of Happy Songs for Happy People.
I bought The Sunset Tree by the Mountain Goats today... and honestly, I've been waiting to be moved by an album like this for a LONG, long time. This thing had me by the throat and in tears as I drove home listening to it from the record store...
Not only is the music beautiful, tuneful, thoughtful and sparse but tastefully arranged... it's one of the most incredibly open, cathartic and unashamedly frail pieces of modern music I have ever heard. And it's beautiful. And it's brave, and it bares more soul than anything I have heard in many, many years. This is why I started enjoying music all along... to hear things like this, to share in the stories that people bring to music, to allow their stories to build upon my own.
We sure have been bombarded with some useless music in recent years, hollow, "fun" dance - rock can't hold a candle to the deep beauty explored in The Sunset Tree. The beautiful that comes from experiences of fear, abuse and the cathartic release of the pent up anger...
Thank God for music that has meaning like this. My God, my album of the year could end up being a shock to even myself.
