Probably will end up with a strong RHCP bent, but also with some Minutemen (on my end) and maybe some TOOL (on his end) as well. I have a feeling that we'll end up being pretty eclectic once everything is in place.

The Mid-West Habaneros ... !! Two members of RHCP are from the midwest as it is...maybe they should already have that name.

Sounds like fun, Rocky! I'd only keep an eye out that the jazz bent - the eclectic, exploratory, linear, free form, [add your own adjectives here] aspect isn't the type that clears a room during the first set.
You've already got this going on since your move to Chicago? That's great, man! Hope it works out! It will get you back into things, regardless.

Oh yeah, I'm not even really capable of playing jazz, so we can only go so far in that direction. There will be a lot of improv I think, but not in any sort of free form exploration or anything.
I actually posted some ads on craigslist looking for people to form a band right when I moved here and I got some crazy responses, none of them really anything that interested me much. This guy is someone I just met through a friend though. Much better way to form a band.
Supposedly the drummer that he's got lined up for this has not only practice space (which, as far as I can tell, is by far the #1 most difficult thing to find when trying to form a band in the city), but also what pretty much amounts to a small recording studio in that space, so we can waste no time in recording once we're ready, or maybe even recording rehearsals just to be able to hear ourselves.

Congratulations on finding a band Rocky. And good luck with that, man. Hope everything works out.

i too am in the process of trying to form a band......weve tried out two drummers in the past week-one guy was an amazing drummer-he played like he knew our songs already-better than the guy we have played on and off with for the past five years-but he was also about thirty five while the rest of us are 23ish....and he wanted to play polished radio rock...he kept asking us if we knew any seether.....the second guy was more our age, but we came to find out that he had only been playing for about a year....everything he played was the same beat-and he couldnt even pick up on the tempos of stuff we were playing-hed just start playing his beat at whatever tempo he felt like-and when we'd stop, he kept going for about thirty seconds before he realized it was over......had to tell the guy we werent interested-which isnt an easy thing to do.

Really. How the hell did he not know you were finished?
It's always cool to have an older out-of-the-loop drummer.

Seether, however, is not cool.

So what band set up do you have? Outside of the absent drummer, that is...

i play guitar-and i sing some stuff-im the only one with the guts to do it......there is also another guitarist and we have a guy who plays bass for us, but as to if hes a permanent thing or not, im not quite sure. we've all known each other and played together in various bands since high school, so its kind of strange trying to bring someone new into it.
im lucky enough, at least at the moment, to have a basement to set up all the gear in and practice, and amazingly havent once in the past three years gotten a noise complaint. i personally have two half stacks-a late 60's 100 watt fender super bassman and a mid 70's 60 watt univox u-1226, so between the two i get pretty loud. i also own a drumset and the two 2x15 bass cabs that we use. for guitars i mainly use one of the following:
86 gibson sg special 73-75 gibson L6-S 96 cij fender 72 tele custom reissue 78 ibanez silver series strat copy (one of those commonly referred to as the "lawsuit" guitars) 78 ibanez pf-100 les paul type thing w/super 70 humbuckers although i have many many more guitars as well, not all of them get as much playing time.
the other guitarist has a marshall jcm 2000 dual super lead and plays fender jaguars and jazzmasters, and also owns a pa-so between us we have just about anyting we could possibly need...at least at the moment.
as for sound we have kind of a grungy-stoner-punk rock thing going on.......
