Mary ~ The alternator on my BRAND NEW car died on me after ONE MONTH on the road when I was alone with the two babies in the car ... !!
I could have killed a Ford executive if there has been one by the side of the road where the car died !

Are you sure you didn't leave the lights on or maybe didn't shut one of the doors all the way?

Are you sure you didn't leave the lights on or maybe didn't shut one of the doors all the way? positive - i came home from campus at like 3:00 yesterday afternoon - the lights were never on! and anyway, my car makes a beeping noise if you leave the lights on and take the key out of the ignition, so there's no way i could forget. and the door was definitely shut all the way - i had to manually use the keys to get in since the automatic locking system obviously wouldn't work w/out the battery - and it was definitely shut all the way. who knows...

Well the only other thing I can think of is that your car is an asshole.

Unlike the the old, unreliable cars of years past, there are small "parasitic" drains on a modern vehicle's battery even with the key out of the car. This is caused by the small amount of current required to keep the electronic control modules' memories alive. Over a period of a month, this could drain the battery significantly.
Mary, after you started and drove the car upon your return, the alternator set about trying to recharge the drained battery. There are three likely possibilities (in order of likelihood): one, the drain and relatively high current recharging was too much for the OEM battery and it shorted/fried (would not accept the charge). Two, the same condition overheated the alternator and fried it. Three, it fried one or more of the electronic control modules. None of these are very common, but it can happen. I'm not sure about the battery, but the other two conditions are covered under warranty. Don't be mad at your car, Mary - it couldn't help it.

Mary, get some jumper cables sister. AAA is a great thing to have even if for peace of mind, but why wait when you could have lassoed some local into giving you a jump right on the spot? If it is the alternator demand that they replace it with a NEW alternator and not a rebuilt one. You would think that is a no brainer, but that's not the usual approach.

I'd take an "old unreliable car" of years gone by any day of the week... especially if it has a standard transmission. They have fewer "smart" parts, so they actually work mechanically, which IMO is much more reliable. Actual working parts seem to have a much longer life expectancy than the strange (and quite expensive) components that are in the newer cars. Give me an old stick shift car and if it won't start, I can simply hop in, roll it down a slight hill, pop the clutch, hear the engine come alive, and off to the market I go!
Hope all ends well with your car problem, Mary.
