Well, I bought it and I definitely DO like it....tho I had it on while answering phones and shit. So it never quite got the full chance to blow me away.
Some interesting guitar, but from what I heard, it wasn't so much the 'soulful' latin-inflected Carlos Santana, but more the frenetic-as-fuck Carlos Santana...which is very much STILL a great thing.
But I figure I likely just missed the slower guitaristic passages a few days ago when I listened to it after I popped it in...the 'atmospheric' slowdowns were there, but I didn't have the guitar leaping out at me(like Santana's has for me, like, always) just then...
It demands another listen...in fact, several.

So I just heard the new Audioslave single and it has got to be the cheesiest crappiest thing I have heard in a long time. Chris Cornell is going into the smack down room for this one. I don't think I can ever listen to Soundgarden the same way again. What a self-indulgent wanker.
My Favorite Full Lengths so far: 1. The Mars Volta-Frances the Mute 2. The Decemberists-Picaresque 3. M.I.A-Arular (this is so AMAZING!) 4. Queens of the Stone Age-Lullabies to Paralyze 5. Thunderbirds Are Now!-Justamustache 6. The Kills-No Wow 7. Bonnie Prince Billy and Matt Sweeny-Superwolf 8. LCD Soundsystem 9. The Coachwhips-Peanut Butter and Jelly 10. High on Fire-Blessed Black Wings 11. Six Organs of Admittance-School of the Flower 12. Antony and the Johnsons-I am a Bird Now 13. The Evens-The Evens
Biggest Sucks 1. Bloc Party 2. Kaiser Cheifs 3. Daft Punk (seriously LCD change the new song to I cancelled Daft Punk playing at my house because they went cheesy) 4. And You Will Know Us By Our Trail of Dead.....man that is one stinky album

Still haven’t heard anything from the new British Sea Power besides the single, "It Ended On An Oily Stage". Good song, though for me it doesn’t quite cast the spell that songs like "Remember Me" and "Fear of Drowning" did.
Still, very much looking forward to hearing the record in its entirety, though. I guess NME are going to start streaming it on Friday, so I’ll definitely be heading over there to check it out.

Lunatic..based on these boards I became a bit of a fan of the Eels, and loved Electroshock Blues and Daisies and was fair-to-middlin with their most recent: Shootenanny (or similar title?)....so, you're none too impressed with their latter?

Doc - I actually like the new disc by BSP better than Decline of... in a lot of ways.
Surprise surprise, it's largely because they've focused more on melody than noise. My increasing resentment for gratuitous noise actually wasn't a factor in the last album by the way, but this whole disc seems much more level without coming out too Coldplay (I like Coldplay btw, before a debate erupts).
I think you'll like it when you hear the whole thing.

Tried to replace my worn out burned version of the Bloc Party advance, but CD PLus was already sold out.
My favorite of 2005 so far. Hands down.

Yeah, I got into the Eels thanks to the old radiohead board. The last Eels release I actually enjoyed was the ep that was packaged with Souljacker. The new one just seems incredibly trite and lame. Although sometimes I think that my tastes have just changed a lot because it doesn't sound all that different from the rest of his stuff, it just doesn't connect with me at all. Maybe I'm only interested in them when they're singing about death.

I found Shootenanny to be a bit of a hit and miss affair... some good tracks, some quite saing - along - able, but none of them hit the same mark as Electro - Shock Blues and Beautiful Freak... alas, maybe there is still another great Eels album to come, one can only hope!

BTW, I take it from your comments that you didn’t find the noisiness of The Decline of… to actually be gratuitous? Re: Bloc Party – have you checked HMV? They were selling off import copies of it last weekend for $14.99.

Aha, this is still the place to come and get some downloading tips.
I haven't heard too much '05 stuff yet, but I really, really like the Bloc Party album still (This Modern Love is a classic song), and their earlier EPs and stuff seem worth a listen.

And yeah... what is Cornell playing at? Although the lazy cheese factor of Audioslave's sudden Elton-esque moment is still light years ahead of the 10 tracks I've heard by The Bravery. Lamentable twats.
Also, and this might be an age thing, but I'm starting to value melody more and more over angsty noise. More Coldplay than NIN. Yup, that's definitely a sign I'm hitting middle age.

Here’s my top 6. There’s another bunch of stuff; Julian Cope, Bloc Party, etc. that would probably make a top ten list but this is the stuff I feel strongest about right now.
The Decemberists – Picaresque Greg Keelor – Seven Songs for Jim Wintersleep – untitled Low – The Great Destroyer British Sea Power – Open Season Joel Plaskett – La De Da
Picaresque is all about the songs – the best batch delivered so far this year, IMHO. I’ve been on a total Decemberists kick since I got it. Keelor’s record is my 'cut away the bullshit' disc of 2005. It centres around the death of his father and is just about as unvarnished as it’s possible to get in the realm of commercially-distributed popular music, I think.
Don’t want to say too much about this one, as I’ve listened to and been blown away by it just the once, but I tried to find Spoon’s Gimme Fiction album yesterday and failing that, downloaded it. Pretty sure it will find itself in the company of the above discs before too long. Likewise Martha Wainwright’s new disc, which I did purchase yesterday. No surprise I suppose, given the pedigree but she really knows her way around a tune.
