a mainstay during baseball games, cubs and sox both
~
and on a far sadder note...a way more personal sad note, the previous obit for mike starr has hit way closer to home. the 20 year old son of one of my best friends died of an overdose saturday night. i watched this kid (and his twin brother) grow up, pull awesome ACT and SAT scores, he was by all accounts doing pretty damned well (except for dropping out of his state university) and he fell into THIS? some seriously badbad BAD shit.

I am sorry to hear that Doc. Hope your friend and his family can find the strength to heal from this terrible loss.

thanks maart...but the doggoned intrigues that are all coming out of this are worthy of a damned soap opera. 3 divorces and sets of brothers resulting from each of those marriages...my buddy was a busy guy. THIS however has absolutely floored him because this son was his shining star. such a terrible shame..

YEah MAn! classic:
(and maybe too a shout-out RIP too for Jeff Conaway.....fleeting in my mind but still a symbol of a male sex image of the 70's in his run with the tv series Taxi. But again, I think a lot of it had to do with his swell hair)

...and since the Big Man's passing, a few others have gone - Travis Bean, Rob Grill and then, the sadly unrealized potential of Amy Winehouse, when she fizzled out not unexpectedly but STILL too damned early.

...and i've got a wake to go to tonight. same buddy as the one who's 20 year old son died back at the end of april...his Dad was slipping away for quite awhile, alzheimers all that shit and finally he was placed in hospice and unfortunately (or not) lasted just a few days with them. UNfortunate for my friend, who has had two pretty monumental 'deaths-in-the-family' within the past 2-3 months. ouch definitely. but he was born in 1918 so 92 years isn't SO bad a run. a huge cubs fan who loved cards, the dice, the ponies...and who passed along those blessings/curses down to EVERY doggoned person in that family, down to the great grandkids. it is SO interesting that every single one of them loves to gamble.
for me, it's a bit weird because i'm definitely not one to gamble as any sort of 'relaxation'...but every time they'd all gather, it was all about who's got how much riding on what game. it engaged all of them, united them in so many ways...so i guess it's got be be considered one of grampa's gifts to them all.
rest in peace mister reichel.

i've been meaning to ask, don, how's your ma doing?
i read of an ER visit just a few days back...i lost your phone # along with that old cell phone i had during my 2008 trial-by-fire or i would've called you. your support back then was a good thing for me. e-mail me if you feel like it. leave your # maybe. of course calling is fine too. i know you're pretty much on your own with this and i am sure it's been pretty tough.

Thx for asking Doc.....been too overwhelmed anymore to apply myself to much Internet yak... Ran down and pretty much a wreck trying to deal with ANYthing these days. Hard to even put an effort into typing......
92.....man, if only a handful of us could be so lucky! I hear ya on the gambling thing....maybe if I had money to toss away it'd be different, but even to some who don't it is a souce of risky enjoyment that I guess I just don't have the nerve for. The Cubs...ha,,,,,as disengaged as my mom is anymore, a game on the TV will perk her up. One drawback is that she seldom seems to know when a game is on or what station to tune to......

don, you know i feel for you....the worst is that so much of this is on your own. you HAVE to find a way to not let it drag you down too badly however. it's going to, regardless...but it does no-one any good if your health gets fucked up in this cause either. and if it IS going that way, it is NOT being selfish either. is she in assisted living? i seem to recall reading something like that, and that she's not in that nursing home hell, yet... i saw (on FB) that you've got a support group of health care folks nearer to you and i sure hope you're talking to them...and allowing yourself to lean on them. anything i can do, i'm here for ya too, buddy. you want only good for your mom, but believe that she (in her most lucid moments) would never want YOU to go downhill either. there's got to be a way...beat the bushes, talk to EVERYone. but you for sure need to find ways to spare yourself some of this stress too.

I hear ya....my best friend's mother -- gets a diagnois and is gone in a handful of months....a former girlfriend's dad....a buddy's uncle....TWO parents of two different friends from Jr High who lived in my neighborhood just in days of each other....last week the father of a drummer from one of my fav local bands. Then there was the overdose of the kid who was closest to being a son to me years ago, old age took the stepfather of another friend, and two weeks ago the lawyer I got to help me deal with my mom's finances gets killed in an ATV accident. Been coming from all corners this year....
How you been doing Maarts?
