This thread is dedicated to that genre referred to as "post- rock". All are welcome and encouraged to provide as much input into this form of music as possible. I myself am just beginning to experience its subtle joys, its intricate nuances.
My understanding of the history of post- rock:
~TORTOISE is largely touted as having "begun" the movement
~Godspeed You!Black Emperor are considered the Emperor's of the scene, currently
~Post-rock owes its musical creativity, not necessarily its style, to Pink Floyd
~Hence, I personally consider Floyd to be the true "godfathers" of post-rock
post rock bands I can think of off the top of my head:
Godspeed You!Black Emperor
mono
explosions in the sky
mogwai
sigur ros
Just to name 5.
My absolute favorite was Godspeed, but I have to say, Japan's own mono have surpassed them, for me, personally, as my #1 favorite post- rock band.
This album is just mandatory as far as I'm concerned to ANY and ALL lovers of music:
The music on this album is so painstakingly, exquisitely, lovingly & crushingly beautiful, that it has rapidly won a place in my heart as one of my favorite albums of all time.
I urge you all to track it down and give it a listen. mono take you on an emotional, reflective journey, without words, to a place so deeply seated in your heart, that to experience their music is akin to re-experiencing life itself all over again, only this time, with all the beautiful and tragic details shown in a new light. At once transcendant and careful, their avante garde approach to constructing/deconstructing traditional music motifs can be as liberating as it is harrowing. The full gamut of human emotions and intelligence is given a thorough rundown in their instrumental pieces, and is guaranteed to leave the careful listener deeply moved, if not overwhelmed.
Mono just released split ep with PELICAN, and mono's song is called "yearning" - definitely the highlight of the split (and I like Pelican very much).
* bands like Pelican and Isis I consider "post- metal", a distinction that I find necessary as these 2 bands' music is more plugged-in, distorted, heavy-chorded sludgy sounding "neo-metal" oft times replete with "deathvocal" touches as in the case of Isis.
I suppose Pelican and Isis both fit under the larger umbrella category of "post-rock", but I thought I'd make the distinction between the 2 by pointing out the necessity of a sub- genre, that of "post- metal".
IN any case, I welcome all post- afficionadoes to present their input here, because this IS the genre of current music I am most excited about continuing to discover.
