No-one's making me rush out for the Depeche Mode release then? luke - read a track-by-track guide to The Darkness' new album today. Looks like there's plenty of material about tits and flabby-armed women. I don't know if you should rush out for the DM, but it's quite good. Other than maybe Ultra it's perhaps my favorite by them since Violator. What you should rush out to buy is the new Echo & The Bunnymen disc, Siberia. Wonderfully vibrant disc from some still capable and credible vets.

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan Thunderbirds Are Now! - Justamoustache Antony & the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl Sufjan Stevens - Illinois The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
That's a complete ranking of all the 2005 albums I have. I guess I didn't buy a ton of new music this year, even though I bought as many total CDs as usual. Still a few 2005 releases I'm interested in that I haven't had a chance with yet (John Cale, the Knitters).

How did Andrew Bird drop out your 'top of the pops', Ndy?
And I'm pretty sure you were the first I saw listing that local genius here....very heartening since I've been listening to his stuff for awhile now...

oh it's a very fine album, and probably somewhere just outside of that list. i just haven't listened to it in months so it's not very fresh in my head. in fact, i probably need to revisit a lot of the stuff from the 1st half of '05 before i make some type of definitive year-end list.
you ever see him live? i caught him at pitchfork's intonationfest this summer and though he was pretty spectacular. slightly out of place amongst the other acts on the bill, but very technically sound and enjoyable.

I actually saw him one time with a pretty stripped down Bowl Of Fire as a three piece at the Cultural Center totally by chance while I was downtown for a dental appointment...one of those lunch time shows they do there. Even then I was impressed...tho this was more of a trad jazz date, with a bit of prog digression just to show these were no ordinary musicians.
And it was awhile ago...I'll guess maybe 4-5 years. Nor have I heard the new disc yet...played the shit out of the one before it though...(whose name I can't remember)...
I fucking love hearing violin in a rock (or nearly any) context...

Still Z, followed by Bloc Party, BSS and the Neil Young's quite a grower. The live Wilco is fan-fucking-tastic as well...shame I don't count best of's or live albums in my year end lists.

Without counting live albums or best ofs (otherwise Kraftwerk would win), we get BSS, Z, Edan, Malkmus, and Wolf Parade.

I just started investing some time with Z, and I get what the fuss is about. Very cool album.
