Every time I've seen that STARS cover I keep having the image of this EXPOLSIONS IN THE SKY cover from the other year pop in my mind: ...save for the reaching hand, they're almost identical right down to the bands' names done in red! I'm with Maarts that maybe I'm going to have to try and pull "Frances" back out....gone there several times without being overly blown over... Same with "De-loused" as I picked it up too back when it was new and had a 'I can take it or leave it' sort of reaction to it. Heh, I'll give it to the guys that they certainly CAN stir it up tho'! Thank You and I agree on the album covers Talk about 2 emotional kicks in the ribs

Patten, I admit I am probably remiss in not having at least Heard Francis the Mute - I really do wanna hear it because I liked if not loved their previous work - I just need someone with a copy they don't mind burning for me... :-) Don't forget to ask for a bonus disc with Frances The Mute Single since the album strecthes 76 min and the single is 14 min. Where Do I send thee?

I think this should qualify as my final 20, since there's fuck all chance I'm re-doing it at this point. 20. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - st 19. Editors - The Back Room 18. The Go-Betweens - Oceans Apart 17. Wintersleep - st 16. Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures 15. Bell Orchestre - Recording A Tape The Colour Of Light 14. Calla - Collisions 13. Brendan Benson - Alternative To Love 12. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better 11. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema 10. Hood - Outside Closer 9. Spoon - Gimme Fiction 8. Stephen Malkmus - Face The Truth 7. Minus The Bear - Menos El Oso 6. Novillero - Aim Right For The Holes In Their Lives 5. Echo & The Bunnymen - Siberia 4. Wolf Parade - Apologies To The Queen Mary 3. My Morning Jacket - Z 2. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm 1. Broken Social Scene - st That's a solid list Don't Change It Stephen Malkmus just missed my list, he really freaked out people with the opener "Penicl Riot" a good album but I still like his solo debut as his best outside of Pavement Calla's always a good live act. Another Editors fan too I can see were growing around here

04. The Raveonettes, Pretty in BlackI'm kind of dissapointed this band seemed to get more attention before they ever had a full album out than after, but as long as they keep making records like they have I really don't care. If their last one was their leather and whips outing, this one is pure 60s Spector girl groups mixed with the Raveonettes noirish tendencies. Favorite tracks: "Seductress of Bums", "Sleepwalkin'", "Ode to LA"06. The Rolling Stones, A Bigger BangWho knew they still had this in them? This isn't just a record that everyone can get behind because it simply isn't embarrassing, but really is a great Stones album. It has that riff, that feel, that groove. Favorite tracks: "Rough Justice", "Infamy", "Laugh I Nearly Died"10. The Greenhornes, East Grand Blues [EP]I wish they'd found time to make a full LP because the 5 songs here are uniformly excellent. Even for garage rock they lean heavily on their 60s British blues influences. Still, you'll never find a better Yardbirds cover band ever and they are an excellent live act. Favorite tracks: "Shelter of Your Arms", "Shine Like the Sun" Ah The Raveonettes an album that grabbed me early butI just lost interest much like Chain Gang did. Still one hell of a live show and "Love In A Trash Can" was one of my favorite songs on radio Bigger Bang so much was made and half an album is truely great the other half I can take or leave still quite an accomplishment. The Greenhorns I think this was everyone's at the station favorite Ep but my mine it's good but Fiery Furnaces EP was the best thing they have ever put out. I look foward to a full album and suspect they will follow Wolf Parade's plan of putting out the Ep with a couple new songs

-Daft Punk, Human After All; I hated this album at first. Now I love it. It took me awhile. I'm sorry. -. My thoughts except love might be too strong word me it still has a few weak points Better than I gave it credit along those same lines Antony/Johnsons- I am A Bird Now-Thanks for making realize I made a mistake on dissmissing it Andrew Bird-Mysterious Production of Eggs- For some reason as of late it's really connecting now for me and I'm not quite sure why I play it at least once before bedtime The Game- Documentary- Ndy you were right better than I gave it for production alone (Buckwild really needs his own The Chronic album) however i don't expect The Game to remain relevant to hip hop heavy's outside of beef

Two artists you guys made me discover with different results ...
While I can't stand Antony's voice, I love Andrew Bird's album ...
Also love The Decemberists !!

I had that Andrew Bird release playing the other day while re-arranging some stuff out of the closet....about 1/2 way through listening to it I was wanting to either slit my wrists or throw the disc against the wall as it was depressing me for some reason.
I let it play out 'tho......

Here's my Top 10 List for 2005. I haven't heard many of the bands (Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Anthony and the Johnstons, etc) properly yet, so have no opinion on them. I love the little I've heard of the Decemberists, but think it might be unfair to out them on here after just a few spins.
01. The Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane: Live at Carnegie Hall 02. Bettye LaVette: I've Got My Own Hell to Raise 03. Vashti Bunyan: Lookaftering 04. Seu Jorge: The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions 05. The Mars Volta: Francis the Mute 06. Fiona Apple: Extraordinary Machine 07. Spoon: Gimme Fiction 08. Kate Bush: Aerial 09. Neil Young: Prairie Wind 10. The White Stripes: Get Behind Me Satan
Honourable Mentions:
. The Magic Numbers: The Magic Numbers . System of a Down: Mezmerize . Lucinda Williams: Live at the Fillmore . Paul Weller: As Is Now . Beck: Guero

US CD album sales show 7% slide
Albums sales in the US dipped by 7% in 2005 but the music download market doubled over the past year, according to early figures.
Sales stood at 602.2 million during the year, down from 650.8 million in 2004, report analysts Nielsen Soundscan.
Downloaded music reached 332.7 million for 2005, an increase of 148% on the previous year.
More than 95% of music is sold in CD format, with Mariah Carey and 50 Cent proving the year's biggest sellers.
Sales of Carey's comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi are narrowly beating 50 Cent's The Massacre for the biggest album of the year, both with sales over 4.8m.
Downloads shot up during the Christmas period, with 9.6 million sold - the biggest week on record for download sales.
"More and more we're seeing customers switch to downloads or burning CDs from their friends," said Jesse Klempner, owner of Aron's Records in Hollywood.
"The last couple of years we've been hanging on by our teeth."
There were also disappointing figures for music videos and DVDs, with sales slipping 23% on the previous year.
The week following Christmas has still to be collated and could boost final year figures when they are officially released in January.
---------
Mariah and 50 Cents ... A match made in heaven !!

That is an excellent list, Doc. I assume there's quite a bit of CanCon in it? I'm almost done with the write-up on my top 50 for 2005, I created my own blog to achieve that....have a read if you like: onobrychis.blogspot.com

Blog looks great, maarts! I will definitely be delving in when time permits.
And yeah, I bought a lot of CanCon this year even by my standards. Though since you mention it, doing a quick count of my list overall and awarding the UK and US each a half for Antony, I come up with 31 Canucks, 21½ Americans, 16½ Brits, 2 from Oz, 2 from France and 1 each from Ireland and Sweden. Probably about right in the overall scheme of things.
