Should've been somewhere on my list. Would have really kicked things up for me in '05 if I'd known about it. Amazing album, discovered thanks to XM radio and Skvor. Thorn, have you heard this? Not sure how big a DK/Melvins fan you are, but this seems right up your alley. "Voted Off The Island" seems like something you'd rant about relating to.

Damn, maarts. A very nice very worthwhile blog...
Reading through that and several other 'best ofs' (incl the excellent all-encompassing one by ol' Patten there), my short list of 'gotta buys':
The new Kate Bush (terrific writeup maarts)
That '...Production Of Eggs' by Andrew Bird who's been a favorite, local or not, for years
That Amadou & Miriam
That latest Maria Mckee which I totally missed...mentioned by Dr D
I thanks ya's all.

Akron/Family's "Running, Returning" is flawless. (does it not sound like a bunch of Radiohead songs mashed together at once though?) Their whole album kind of sounds like OK Computer to me, only with banjos. I'm going to go see them at the end of the month. It should be an awesome show, everybody I've talked to say they put on a great live show.

I thought it was pretty lame, but I haven't really liked anything he's done since Daisies of the Galaxy. It was less lame than Shootenanny! though.

HOly shit they consistently put on stellar shows. One of the loudest shows I ever saw was during their Stoner Witch tour. Daaaaaamn. I'd love to check Jello out w/em. Man I didn't even know about this album. Thanks for pointing it out. The one Melvins collaboration I'm dying to get is w/Lustmord. You ever listen to their album Crybaby? It's got that rare 15-min long tool song, divorced. That shit is awesome. Lot of other wack stuff on there, too, what w/David Yow of Jesus Lizard contributing, Hank Williams III, and the unusual cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sung by none other than Leif Garrett!

Thorn- it's not the first album Biafra's made with the Melvins- check out Never Breathe What You Can't See as well- it's spoken word-Jello buried underneath some fine Buzz Osborne-isms! Yuppie Cadillac is hilarious!
Finally managed to finish off my top 50! Damn, was so late home every night and couldn't find the words to write!

Bow - for what it's worth I really enjoyed Blinking Lights and Other Revelations... it may not be E's best work, but there's a hell of alot of fun and worthy material on it, and it's the closest of the newer Eels stuff to the earlier Eels sound... I think it's a great double album set. Not my mst favourite of the year, but if you like their earlier stuff, you'd probably like it!

Still need to hear some things, and I'm sure I'll change some stuff even before then, but here goes: Top 10 in '05 10. System of a Down- Hypnotize 9. Madonna- Confessions 8. The Darkness- One Way Ticket 7. Local H- Alive in '05 6. Bloc Party- Silent Alarm 5. New Pornographers- Twin Cinema 4. Novilerro- Aim for the Holes in Their Lives 3. Broken Social Scene- s/t 2. Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have it so Much Better 1. System of a Down- Mezmerize See, this is why it's goddamn moronic to put your "best of this year" list right at the end of the year. Now that 2005 has actually had some time to sink in: 10. Joel Plaskett- La De Da 9. Ween- Shinola, Vol. 1 8. Jello & the Melvins- Sieg Howdy! 7. New Pornographers- Twin Cinema 6. Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have It So Much Better 5. Stephen Malkmus- Face the Truth 4. System of a Down- Mezmerize (Hypnotize is garbage, I've come to realize) 3 Stars- Set Yourself on Fire 2. Novillero- Aim Right for the Holes in their Lives 1. Broken Social Scene- s/t

You're right, Mantis. Didn't forget near as many other albums as last time, though. When it comes time for year in review, I always choke. Z would get a solid 8 on that list, though.
And yeah, thorn, you still need to check that out.
