Or possible only a note to Thorny and Skvor. Why is this supposedly an embarrassing genre? Why hide all the Christian Death albums when you finally score a date with that little hipster chick you've been stalking since you saw the Libs at the Birmingham Academy? (metaphorically speaking, of course - note to partner: I didn't see the Libs and there is no hipster chick really) I want to divine the ten greatest goth albums ever. Through a collective group effort of all those willing to admit to tuning into the dark (and slightly campy) side on occasion. I'm paralysed already though, on the question of whether Pornography is a goth album. I think not, maybe. I'll start off with a no-brainer from the beginning of the blackened age of goth: In the Flat Field My other nomination (for now) would be for the last truly good - though not truly great - goth album ever made, imo: October Rust I should really get a blog so I can ramble on to myself without fear of contradiction.

As of right now, there's only one poster getting a wedgy for having started this thread, but depending on who else responds there could be more. I'm keeping score and handing them out. Post carefully.

I couldn't decide between FAITH, PORNOGRAPHY, or SEVENTEEN SECONDS . . . I went with Pornography, as it is the most familiar to me.

Ah, yeah, I think that Skinny Puppy is just brilliant. From the minute I first heard them, I have been totally obsessed. I personally love the trancy-ness of "Faith" over anything else. For some reason, that has always been a personal favorite fo mine.
For the This Mortal Coil, it was hard to choose because I think all three of their records are essential.

Wedgies be damned!
If we're counting Pornography and Closer then that's 2 clear places in most goth top tens, I imagine. It's mainly US influence that's led to the 'goth' tag being applied to both bands though. As Fat Bob himself said, if he'd walked into London's Bat Cave back in the 80's and calimed the Cure to be a goth band he'd have been pelted with mascara and drowned in a big vat of patchouli oil.
But I'm willing to admit, in hindsight, that the Americans have got their categorisation right in these cases.
I love "Faith" too Skvor. In particular the title track. But there's a hypnotic monotony to that album I just enjoy.

I know, I know... Catastrophe Ballet and Only Theatre of Pain are better. I just love the inspired warpedness of Atrocities though. Red Lorry Yellow Lorry should be sampled in compilation form, as they were one of the best singles bands ever to grace the goth movement.

Elizium was the better album. But this is the more gothic and one of my favourite 3 goth albums of all time. Last one for now... Antichrist Superstar If you can have Portishead, thorny, then I reckon there should be no problem wih me including this slab of Reznor-fingerprinted genius.

haha, love it. . .
Well I did include manson (as well as several other "questionable gothics", such as korn, the pumpkins, ministry, tool, etc) in my list, and that album in particular I feel to be the most "gothic" of all his output (not to mention my personal favorite of his), so that's awesome, man.
Anyone who fails to see the gothic sensibilities in manson, korn, tool, and ministry really needs to pay more attention...
