I can't take to Korn myself in any big way, but I don't really see the goth in them at all.
HMF - an interesting list, though you're obviously more into the goth-metal side of things, as opposed to the arty/cheesy, camp and industrial parts of the genre I grew up with. While you're here, what's your take on Mayhem? I know the back story is sensational, but do the tunes on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas really match the hype? I had a copy of an mp3 or two and enjoyed the weird guitar sounds, but the vocals were rough as fuck.
I could happily play layla's list all day long. Manson might be a fake but Reznor isn't, which is why Antichrist Superstar is such a great album.

Honestly? Well I have only listened to them twice. The first time you hear it, it is so different and the music does have a very hypnotic effect that it makes for some interesting listening. But the thing about some of the Norwegian Black Metal bands is its so raw and garage like, and so distorted it is difficult to stomach more than one or two songs. Not too mention the magnitude of that entire scene and exactly what was going on over there. I am not talking about the church burnings so much as I am the murders and the 'supposed' suicide of Dead. I have my own theory on that deal, I think he was murdered. Heh we had a rash of copy cat church and synogogue vandalism and burnings in Florida during all that shit. But then it is the home of Death Metal, which is what these guys were supposedly trying to mimmick, only they took it just a little bit too seriously putting the lyrics into real actions with all that crap they did. And after really looking at this it really leaves a bit of a bad taste in one's mouth to even consider listening to the band. I mean who in their right fucking mind puts their band mate with his head blown off on an album cover? Besides Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child are far superior bands without all the fucked up garbage. But Samael's music is the most hypnotic I have heard, even though their stuff now is much different than the early stuff. They imo are the most inovative band out there now. They have changed their sound slowly with each and every album and they still kick ass.

And as for Michael Moynihan, yep I have his book. Talk about motives.. that book is nothing more than a very pathetic attempt of "spreading" the word to the mindless droans and kiddies, from someone that really doesn't know dick diddly about Heavy Metal. Other than his precious Church burners its lies and half truths. That and his artsy shittsy Blood Axis is horrible.
I mean anyone that would print that Venom, whom were inspired completely by KISS and use to rehearse in a church, are evil has got a damn screw loose.

Layla, Skinny Puppy and Ministry after consulting my much older friends and family, were the pinnacle of goth in the mid 80s. Both Ogre and Al Jourgenson were the pinups for the goth gays and goth girls alike aside from Morrissey, Robert Smith, David Bowie, and Peter Murphy. I do really like your top goth list. It's quite good. I am also very familiar with Suicide Girls as I am a dirty later 20s year old man who loves corets and black leather. thanks biatch I want to marry a Suicide Girl & have suicide babies with her. excellent on the SP & Ministry being gothness too.

Manson is the biggest marketing/PR genius of modern times. He should work for Trump.

Nina Hagen rules & Diamanda Galas is deliciously evil but Lydia Lunch kicks all ass (maybe not Excene though, she invented ass kicking):

I'm sorry. I have no idea who 'Welshy' is. Perhaps there's some closet sheep shagger around here that I've not yet been introduced to?

I have had a crush on Lydia Lunch for about 12 years now. I personally really like the Mayhem record because it's so raw and scary. The picture was taken by Euronymous, who was the guitar player for Mayhem, the very guy that a year later almost to the day would be killed by Varg Vikernes (Burzum). As far as the theory that he was murdered, I have heard that, but most think that it's complete crap. I think the guy was just really weird and messed up and ended his life. It seems like at that time, most of those guys were just insane.

The "goth" being slowly extruded from KoRn has its roots arguably in their debut recording.
I for one plainly see it, since the day I first saw KoRn live (March-95) was the day I walked away comparing them to Nine Inch Nails.
That comparison only grew album to album. The darkness inherent to KoRn's thematic material is an obvious beginning towards understanding why they are just as "goth" as Skinny Puppy.
It may seem like a mere acoutrement that Jon requisitioned H.R. Giger himself to sculpt his now infamous mic-stand (dubbed "Majesty's Grace" - if that ain't goth enuff for ya, you can go back to sleep, it's ok), but that beauty heralds the tides of humanity their flag ship plows through each time they embark across their stormy sea of dissonant, externalized angst that is expressed with as much purity as possible through their amps.
The real reason KoRn finally "graduated" to full-blown, bona-fide "goth"-status is perhaps on too large of a scale for those unfamiliar with their art to see, kinda like missing the forest for the trees:
And that is the simple fact that Jonathan's sensitive radar for the entire Evil- Cathedral/Mechanism which each successive generation of dispossesed kidz perforce must be fed or shredded through, is a fundamentally honest radar, which only serves to highlight the far-reaching scope of the viewpoint of this internal Eye. (I.E, Korn is in fact nearly a "10" on the "goth"-scale, a beautiful dirty secret we fukkers love to keep to ourselves, if truth be known).
Y'all can keep yer run-o-the-mill goth bands, that shit is overdone & underplayed anyhow. I'll stick with the REAL goths, thank you very much: peter murphy, Bella Morte, bauhaus, korn, skinny puppy, nine inch nails, Sol Invictus, theater of tragedy, raison d'etre, etc.

In fact, shiiiiit, the 5th time I saw Korn, when HELMET opened for them, back around '98, '99 - - I saw em in Lewiston, Maine that time -- hell, their entire stage getup was constructed to resemble an immense, Evil Cathedral. And Jonathan wore this sterling black cassock robe, an Evil Priest's smock if I ever saw one!
It was fucking beautiful .

Dude - Vikerness repeatedly stabbed Euronymous. This resulted in Euronymous's painful demise. There is no disputing this really happened, as far as I have come to understand the story. It's all in the book LORDS OF CHAOS. Oh wait . . .you're talkin about Dead. I just realized that from spot-checking Tuatha's post, above. Yeah I think Dead pretty much put the muzzle of that cold oily barrell right up into his mouth. The pic above clearly shows the results of what happened next.
