The bands who everybody thinks are hot, really leave me disappointed. I.e.
Radiohead The Strokes Wilco Modest Mouse Broken Social Scene U2
one exception - The White Stripes (I love them)

I've only listened to BSS 2 or 3 times and haven't connected. They're not in the rejected folder yet though.
Radiohead, Strokes and Modest Mouse are amongst my favourite bands, though Modest Mouse was a recent and dramatic conversion.
Wilco are not for me. I'm not big on Americana. It probably helps to be American.
U2 were shaping up for greatness, then released The Joshua Tree... which I've scientifically proved to be the worst album of all time, to the satisfaction (and eventual agreement) of all my peers on here. Even Sigman, who thought he liked it for a while there. Achtung Baby! was like a last, glorious rage at the dying of the light.
White Stripes are okay if you like bluesy minimalist rock sung by a retard and backed by a drummer who sounds like she lost both arms in a coach crash. Lo-fi my arse.

I tried Being There, Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Mermaid Ave........all (or most) have been sold.
I own The Bends and like it fine, but never connected with OK Computer, and have never felt even the least bit interested in Kid A, Hail Theif, or anything else by them.
I bought Moon Over Antarctica and Good News FPWL Bad News and could not find anything that clicked with me. Both got eBayed.
I liked WAR in it's day but only still own Actung Baby and it gets no play time in my player anymore.
Do you remember when The Strokes were EVERYWHERE!! I remember reading 100s of posts describing the sheer brilliance of their music and using accolades placing them with the greats of all time. When I heard Is This It , I said to myself "is this it?"
It must be me though. Many of my favorite artists have tiny followings and sell almost no records - Matthew Sweet, Del Amitri, Graham Parker, Lagwagon, Chixdiggit, Grandaddy, The Jayhawks, Guster etc.

Prepare for The Strokes to be all over the place again. The new album trumps everything released this year.

I recall going on these boards after the release of the Strokes debut commenting that even if this is the only worthwhile release from this much -hyped band, it still is a damn fine album..catchy, melodious, attitude-imbued..........nothing to change the world by, but just fun rock and roll..nothing more/nothing less...I heard a new Strokes song yesterday on the radio......great bass line...everything else was deplorable.....
other hyped/revered/beloved bands-artists that I don't get:
(1) Aeorsmith (2) Radiohead (excepting the Bends) (3) Korn/system of a down/ and all other punk/metal-like bands..though admittedly I've heard only one or two songs.......I think this is officially an age issue!!!! (4) Dave Matthews (evokes major zzzz's) (5)Bloc Party (heard a couple songs.......incredibly over-hyped) (6) franz fernidad (a couple of catchy songs but that's about it) (7) Fiona Appel (just don't see the enrapture with Ms Self-Absorption incarnate)

I want to make out with you right now! I swear you are the only other person I know who swears that "The Joshua Tree" is quite possibly the worst record ever made.

I definitely don't get System of A Down. They seem to be a bunch of jerk-offs ripping off old 80s thrash (Anthrax, DRI) and turning it back into something political. One thing I think that they should have learned, since they are friends with Tom Morello (and even his band isn't political anymore), is that their jarhead jock audience doesn't really give a shit about their causes. Let's face it, kids just want to rock. The days of us walking down the streets talking about Joe Strummer, Jello Biafra, or Ian MacKaye are over for a while. It seems to be the only guys in "political" bands these days just make me want to laugh. They don't really say anything.
I have to say that if you didn't have a problem with the current administration, but were woken up to that fact by that witless Dylan pussy hack Bright Eyes, I want you to burn your voter registration card and move far far away. Bright Eyes is the worst band of all time and I hope that he goes down in history as being the biggest joke ever to exist in music.
Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah-Here's a better one for you, how about I snap my fingers and scream, "NO"! I should care because these guys are from Brooklyn (fuck NYC!) and their standing in the "I ripped off David Byrne" line? Is that what four or five bands deep now behind Wolf Parade and all of those other hacks? Long band names make you cook? The legitimacy of liking this band is starting to fade like this band will in 8 months?
Outhud/!!!-I'm glad that basically the same people are in both bands so I can avoid spending double the money on disappointing hippie garbage.
Joanna Newsom/Cocorosie-I will admit a liking for Devendra Banheart, but man, these girls sound like cats being eaten alive by helium monsters. Not to mention their quasi-racist lyrics and their bad penchant for wearing mullets and making sure that everyone knows they don't wax their upper lips. Um, seriously, at this point, we don't care, I'd give anything for you girls to grow some ovaries and learn how to put something in your music that doesn't give me the reaction that I just got back from watching a donkey show.
Man Man-Ugh.....fucking beanstalk rock. Worst lyrics ever and literally sounds like east coast kids mixing childrens stories with a very inept apeing of Tom Waits. Another "buzz" band to just avoid.
The Libertines-Just because you do drugs doesn't mean you write good songs. The Stones could write really great songs, so could the New York Dolls, and the Beatles. Getting produced by the most worthless member of the Clash isn't that much of a claim to fame either. These guys seem to be the Jet it's okay for people "with good taste" to like.

No........there is nothing more nightmarish to me than hearing any note off of "The Joshua Tree". I hate it so much that I will actually leave friend's parties who put it on. I've even bought used to copies of it on vinyl and smashed it with a hammer so that noone will buy it. I get almost fundamentalist Christian in my hatred for it. I don't know why because I am such a huge fan of "Boy" and "October" but that album is the anti-christ.

Produced by the most worthless member of the Clash? I don't think I've heard a note from the Libertines, but I've got to stick up for Mick Jones here. Jonesy was the instrumental architect of the Clash's sound. The production of Sandinista! was largely Jones' doing. The brilliant, brittle sound of Police and Thieves (with that "WHACK" guitar counterpoint) was Mick's work. Take Mick Jones out of the Clash, and you've got, well ... (Cut the) Crap. And while a lot of Big Audio Dynamite's output wasn't up to snuff, the good stuff (esp. The Bottom Line) reaffirmed the fact that the man has a great ear for a hook, and can assemble fantastic sounds in the studio. Fucking genius, just because he looks like an old British banker these days doesn't lessen the man's accomplishments.
The Clash were a great example of how a band can exceed the sum of its parts, but Jones' was easily one of the two most talented guys in what was (in my ever so humble estimation) the greatest rock and roll band on the planet. Poor Terry Chimes would qualify as the least essential member of the band, but even there, how can you really slag someone who came back to the group on a moment's notice, on the eve of their biggest tour committments, and then learned Topper's (not at all easy) parts to songs he'd had nothing to do with? Say what you will about Chimes' lack of innovation on the debut, but the way he came in to pick up Topper's dropped ball in '82 was awfully big of him.

Bah humbug, Mick Jones is a wanker. While it is cool that he has aged gracefully, he's still my least favorite member of The Clash.
