AltCountry usually consists of guys that WANT so desperately to sound like old country but can't really write the songs. It also usually consisted of a leftist lyrical nature in the beginning or lyrics that had a "punk" leaning, which as I type, just sounds really trite. Nevertheless it's pretty much country music that Nashville wouldn't touch. Now, CMT has basically an alt country video hour (the 120 minutes of the country crowd I guess) which has been very well. Although this might have something to do with the fact that ANYTHING remotely countryish will do better than the crap of Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, and that awful troll Keith Urban.

BSS, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, Art Brut, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Fugazi...fucking wankers, all of them. And fuck you all for liking them while high quality bands like Sun Kil Moon (who can survive even a bad Modest Mouse covers album), Local H, Porcupine Tree, K's Choice and VAST go relatively unknown.
Arctic Monkeys, Libertines and Art Brut get special props here for actually singing in a British accent, something only Super Furry Animals can get away with because they happen to be both Welsh and charming, not pretentious and "OH LOOK AT US DID HEY NME DID WE MENTION WERE THE NEW BRITISH NIRVANA". I hope those bands get a herpes infection deep within their eyesockets.
On the other hand, CYHSY is pretty ok, all things considered. And Wilco is quite fab, although it's Ghost is Born that should get the praise, not the eh YHF. Wolf Parade have their moments but you can take em or leave em.

And I've saved you all the trouble of having to deal with my Strokes rant. Let's just say you'll never again see the phrase "dirty, unwashed hippie skulls pancaked by angry gorilla fists" in any other context.

I'll disagree about BSS, Sonic Youth, The Pixies and Fugazi but the rest of it's pretty close. My dislike for Art Brut is turning into hatred though. I keep reading how "witty" they are but they're just assholes who yell in a cocky accent. "Hey, we joined a band!" "Hey, I got a girlfriend!" Hey, your band sucks!

Oh yeah, I really like the new Strokes album...I tried not to, but it turns out it's pretty good.

Ha...just when I think I'm marching to my own beat around here, I read posts like these and I know there is hope....a hope that pretty average bands will not get acceptance as the best of the year/decade/ever just because a bunch of music criics say it's so....OK but I like Modest Mouse and The Pixies, but that doesn't mean shins post isn't right where I'm at...I'd add Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand too....yeah most hyped bands do leave me cold, and the very best bands break up in obscurity...I've learnt to deal with that, you have to when you come from a country as isolated as mine, with what is probably the strongest indie musical scene in the world....

Broken Social Scene is amazing, and my love for MBV is documented. Everything else, pretty right on. Oh, and Sonic Youth is fantastic.
Oh yeah, Franz and Bloc Party are fun, but meaningless in the long run.

If you can't get into Broken Social Scene you need to try harder. They're a band who offer infinite reward if you're prepared to invest enough time. No quick fixes and rarely a blow your socks off reaction right off the bat. Just not that type of band.

As for so called hype bands, I got to thinking about something while I was putting my lunch together this morning... I used an inexpensive disposable plastic container for some left overs I was taking to work, knowing full well they might spill a bit in my lunch bag and maybe not keep things completely fresh, but that ultimately my lunch would be every bit as enjoyable in the short term, in lieu of having packed it in a more expensive and dynamic "Rubbermade" type container with more staying power. On the other hand, if I had expected this same throw away container would work for me and my lunch over say a week's duration or better, I would probably be dissapointed and would end up with the runs. I've since consumed my lunch, and as anticipated, the temporary packaging did exactly what I needed for as long as I needed. I didn't overthink it. I didn't shit all over the disposable container ad nauseum, since with proper perspective the container held a valid place as a tool in my consumption cycle. I still have the unique and original containers at home I can count on to be far superior for years to come when I'm storing food, but they don't diminish the alternatives when I need something I can throw away when It's no longer of any use. What am I saying? To be honest, I think I lost the handle on my point somewhere in there. I think it was something to the effect of maybe if we stopped spending so much time shitting on Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, and rather just wrapped our lunches with them, we could step back long enough to give them some props for offering something that's keeps things tasty for a bit while we're waiting for the more amazing supper we have put away in a Tool or Radiohead container (for instance) to thaw and blow our nuts off when we sit down at the dinner table. Or something.

...but riley...did you go on ad nauseum to everybody you met and tell them that your lunch had been packed in the best container in the world this year...bet you didn't because it bloody well wasn't. You neglected to hype your shitty disposable container....now if only we can find a way not to accept the hype of shitty disposable bands we'll be on to it.....I hear FF and Bloc Party enough, I know they can write a tune, I also know they are nowhere near the best, so just as your plastic lunch container would have you spending plenty of toilet time with continual use, the day after day hype of these bands is giving me the shits....

Actually, there were more than a few people in the lunch room here at work today who took exception with my excitement and said, "Hey Dog, fuck off with all the hype about your fucking tupperware! It's just not that fucking good".
They were really confused when I replied with, "why do you hate Franz Ferdinand so much?"

My Take on Hype Bands: I have been listening to RNR since beatles circa 1964 so I've seen my share of stalwarts and just plain warts!!....................and yes, there have been many hyped bands I have been enamored with...probably the earliest one being the Monkees!!.................and in later years I have bought some one-album knock-offs such as the Knack, 20-20, Human Sexual Response, etc. all of which had some critical kudos but didnt' have it for the long run......and even when I bought the STrokes debut I viewed it potentially as 'hype' but loved their knack for melody........so I don't see it as anything problematic about being endeared with some band of the moment as long as there is a semblance of perspective about the quality of the group (in other words, don't start calling them the next Ramones/Beatles/Dylan, etc.)..............
That being said I never go back to my one-album hyped bands after a couple of years......but I sure still play Revolver and London Calling alot!!! (of course, maybe at that time, people viewed the Clash as so much hype!!)..........

....but I don't hate "tupperware"....I just think you could have it so much better....
..and Bowig..in NZ The Clash were basically unheard of until "Rock The Casbah" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"...go figure. Oh and while I'm on The Clash, I still think Give Em Enough Rope is waaaaay underhyped....
