Arctic Monkeys, Libertines and Art Brut get special props here for actually singing in a British accent, something only Super Furry Animals can get away with because they happen to be both Welsh and charming Which one? Sheffield/Yorkie? Manchester? Cockney? I've yet to hear a British band who don't sing in a 'British' accent of some kind, even if it's good old Radiohead middle class Received Pronounciation. All the people queueing up to shit on Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party are fashionable but wrong. I realise they're not very 'music snob', and that they're too simple and tuneful for people who want to wank over CYHSY all day.

BSS, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, Art Brut, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Fugazi...fucking wankers, all of them. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, right, wrong, right, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong...

The backlash against most hyped bands leave me cold. That's 'cos you don't have the anti-English chip on your shoulder that most Aussies/Kiwis (and even many Americans) have. Most people on these boards (with the exception of the Canadians) hate the English. I realise it's okay to hate the English. It's the last respectable form of racism.

Piffle. There's no such thing as an anti-English chip on our shoulders, just a mere resignation to the fact that the media and record companies are more inclined to hype something new coming from the States or England rather than local new product. It's safer to put promotional dollars towards something that has gained media attention in England and USA rather than start their own hype. The differences are quite disproportional when it comes to promoting the Kaiser Chiefs (which was full-on from the start, let me assure you, I was there at the birth) or Eskimo Joe (same company, no promos but their last album went platinum on airplay and touring alone....go figure. And not a cent spent on advertising until the moment the band was number one in the album charts.)
It has nothing to do with the ever ongoing stupid preconceptions that both of our nations have of each other. As far as I'm concerned you're more than welcome to the Ashes!

As it turns out, I like some very hyped bands and some I just don't care for... so by and large I've learned to ignore hype as a general rule - because its such a poor indicator of real quality in musical terms - its so often misleading too.
Everyone has talked for more than fifteen years of "who is the next Nirvana?"
Has it occured to anyone there isn't going to be a next Nirvana? Does it really matter? I mean really, it seems to me all pretty pointless, and the "hype" word should really just be replaced with "this band is receiving the most marketing push, as Maarts points out so well.
And yeah, this is a rambly and inconsistent post...lol... but I am tired and its stinking hot.... hahahahahahahaha!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO the next Nirvana has came out at least by my count 657 times since 1995 Anybody buy Eminem or Kanye West as every major mag. choice for artist of the decade yet?

Hip hop stands or falls for me with the music as most of the time the rapper's voice starts to irritate- Eminem's whine goes right up my kazoo after a while, though I like some of the samples he uses for his grooves. Kanye's very cheesy and a bit up and down, not enough crust to spend my dough on. Thinking of all modern hiphop's output and I'd go for Outkast, Phrenology by The Roots or any of the classics- Eric B & Rakim, Grandmaster Flash (Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel still kicks major ass!) or some of the crossovers- like Breakestra!

Hip Hop tends to fall flat with primarily for the sheer fact it's a frantic and all over place style by it's very nature - but it really annoys me when you hear this song about serious issue and then some "MC" busts into lines about his skills as a performer - I mean, why the fuck do you wanna know about how good your artist is as you listen to him / her?! Isn't that for you to decide and not have shoved down your throat?
Granted, this tendency is leaving alot of newer hip hop artists - which is a good thing indeed.
I seem to have a thinner palette than alot of others when it comes to hip hop, but, uughhh, it just so often loses me - no matter how intense it should be, I think it speaks a language I just totally can't identify with...
Lord knows I've tried though!

I don't think that that was what Patten asked- no, I didn't buy it on the strength of a recommendation of a mag but I did at least listen first before I formed my opinion. At least a mention of the existence of an artist/album is neede to pique my interested. Even when it is so over the top as Patten described.

oops.... probably went out on a tangent there- sorry Patten!
My answer would be, No, I've never bought any album hip hop / rock / metal, whatever - on the strength of a magazine's recommendation.
I do tend to go from friends interests, hearing things through people I know or meet - or just songs that I randomly hear on the radio and enjoy - media opinion tends to affect me little when an artist is hyped or appearing on a magazine.
Although overexposure really can have a negative effect on me...

ROTFLMMFAO! Maarts, that is one of the single funniest things I've seen this year! And an oh-too-true commentary on the sad state of hip-hop/r&b/etc.
As Ray Davies once wrote, "predictable: that's the word of the year."
