I've yet to hear a British band who don't sing in a 'British' accent of some kind, even if it's good old Radiohead middle class Received Pronounciation. If you're suggesting Yorke sings like the guy from Arctic Monkeys or Art Brut, then I'm forced to conclude that you haven't heard any of these bands.

I do think that Yorke does have an accent when he sings, it's just not as pronounced as Art Brut or the Arctic Monkeys. I think the greatest thing about the Arctic Monkeys is that they have genereated so much interest and it was before they had a record label or anything. That's some old school shenanigans right there. Not too many bands have been able to claim that.
That guy from Coldplay (yucky yucky, they are just too syrupy for me) has an accent that comes out through his songs as well.

Well country singers have southern "accents" when they sing, too, except they aren't putting the emphasis on the accent on purpose. And if they do, we'd label them corny.
Art Brut and the AMs, however, insist that you acknowledge that they are British. They make that the center point of their vocals. It's pretentious and not endearing.

Yeah, I hear that...it's like the guy from Art Brut is over emphasizing his cocknyness. I suppose it's one of the things that makes them clever or whatever.

Hmm... if you were English you'd be guilty of class snobbery here. Art Brut are wankers, but some of these singers are working class lads from heavily accented areas. Like, say, Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays? That's pure, 100% scummy Mancunian and he speaks the same. You're just excusing the rich Home Counties kids like Yorke who don't have the strong dialects. The singer of the Arctic Monkeys has a working class Yorkshire accent and it's very distinctive and very strong. Maarts - yeah, just teasing on the old Aussie/Brit rivalry. It's our responsibility to do our duty occasionally, eh? Scumbag

Shaun Ryder sounds like someone was trying to steal his wallet or his pint of bitter while his mom was giving birth to him and he never quite recovered. He has a great fucking voice btw, so let that be a lesson to those with aspirations of fronting dirty ass white boy funk bands from Manchester.

On a quasi related topic, as I listen to the very song here at work, I think we can all agree "Dinner Lady Arms" by The Darkness is the greatest song released in 2005.
Okay we can't, but it is.

Hey, look at Mark E Smith! Man, talk about a working mancunian accent!

No we can't Because it's "Seemed Like Such A Good Ideal At The Time" but Where was My Darkness Christmas Album in 2005?

Broken Social Scene is amazing, and my love for MBV is documented. Everything else, pretty right on. Oh, and Sonic Youth is fantastic. Oh yeah, Franz and Bloc Party are fun, but meaningless in the long run. As if BSS will be any more relevant than these two in the long run. As if what BSS is doing is any "newer" or more "unique" than these two. As if MBV means shit now.

I prefer "Knockers." The way Justin Darkness yowls "I LOVE WHAT YOU'VE DONE WITH YOUR HAIR" is catchier than anything off the first album.

I love a lot of hyped bands, and a lot of bands that aren't hyped. But if Local H was as big as Bloc Party, I'd probably just be scratching my head at why people were ignoring Bloc Party.
Thing about most hyped bands is that they're as good as your favorite stuff. They're great little nuggets of music that someone with a bit more influence than you discovered. They're just as good as your favorite little obscure bands, because that's all they are, really.
And as for The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and Modest Mouse...sorry, Shin, but you're way off your rocker. And K's Choice has always sucked. And VAST live was just ridiculous.
